Reason 11: Some tests just aren't well written. I find this a lot with the INTP (real me) vs. INTJ (me, according to unclear tests). These tests ask what I prefer, with this very word or similar ones, they don't ask what I _do._ Examples:

* "Do you prefer to have an organized schedule?"

Yep, I do, too bad I never manage to organize it and have felt guilty about that for years on end.

* "Do you prefer to finish your tasks ahead of the deadline?"

Why, certainly! Too bad 95% of all tasks I ever did over the last 40 years I finished 5 minutes before the deadline, in utter existential despair, 4% of them I finished after the deadline, counting on pure luck to get me out of trouble, and maybe 1% I really managed to finish maybe one or two days ahead of the deadline!

* "Do you prefer to work in a stressful environment?"

Oh, absolutely not! Too bad every environment I end up in turns up stressful because of the previous two issues, specially when deadlines are approaching and the lack of clear scheduling makes things even worse.

It took me a while to realize the language of many tests is this imprecise. Once I began answering what I actually do, not what I'd prefer, I began to consistently get INTP, time and again.

i took the 16personalities test three times and everytime i got INFP. i also relate to INFP things so i was pretty confident to say i am an INFP. but when i discovered cognitive functions, i realized i don't really relate to the INFP cognitive function stack. i find myself leaning more towards an ISFJ (i don't see myself as an Fi, but more of Fe. and i'm definitely Si > Ne). it took me a while to "shift" and accept that my type was wrong all along. not just bc i've always seen myself as INFP, but also bc of ISFJ stereotypes that made me question myself back and forth. i can't bake, and i'm not going to a friend hangout and offer everyone cupcakes bc humans scare me. i hate hospital related stuff so i'm not becoming a nurse anytime soon. i feel like these tests are one thing, but the stereotypes are another. in my opinion, just listen to yourself and how you perceive yourself. some automated questionnaire online and personality stereotypes will never type you better than you typing yourself

for me the enneagram type was a lot more complicated finding the correct type instead of the one that I was convincing myself I was. there was never much difference with personality type results for me, usually infp but i learned i could convince the test i was enfp if I chose to be indifferent about social situations or even preferred them over being by myself.

I got INFP on the 16 Personalities website, and several others. A few months ago, Cloverleaf gave me INFJ. It took watching several videos comparing and contrasting INFPs and INFJs, as well as several videos explaining the cognitive functions before I was sure that I am definitely an INFJ, not an INFP. I tend to be messy and can be spontaneous, so I thought I was a P type. Then I realized that I prefer neatness; I just don’t have the energy to maintain it. And while I can be spontaneous, I prefer to plan things ahead in advance. All these are points Frank made for why we get mistyped. Lol!

When I'm taking personality tests, I often find it hard to determine "in which type of situation are they talking about" when it comes to how much a certain trait applies to you. For example just took a test asking "what is your favorite strategy"? Obviously referring to aggression versus defensive level. But in what area of life? Actual combat? Chess? Something career related? In personal conflict with people around you?

This video is giving me A LOT to think about. I’m an ISFP who pretty consistently tests INFP, but I regularly struggled with physical and mental health since childhood. I’m happy to say it’s all getting sorted out and it feels like I can be permanently well soon. I think I was in a loop of doom that made my Ni more prominent than it would be if I was well. Also, I feel that I was pushed to be a little too academic by the school system I was in. I think the sensing was completely ignored. I had a strength that I didn’t have a lot of help developing because I was “supposed” to be other things. I say I’m ISFP now, but I wonder what I think my is when I’ve reached my health goals.

Every test I took told me I am an INTJ while actually I am an ISFP. I always thought I was organized, but I am just extremely perfectionistic, which is not the same. And I always assumed I wasn’t very emotional, but being down to earth doesn’t necessarily mean you’re a logical thinker.

And culture plays a role as well in my opinion. I am Dutch, so I am very direct and very down to earth, so in general I don’t really identify myself with the answers that indicate you are a feeler (extraverted or introverted).

“Or maybe because you’re more anxious, you’ll identify as more of a J trait because you’re trying to control everything around you”

This.
This is 100% accurate. Anxiety makes the determination of the J or P trait very difficult. I’m an ESTP, but I have anxiety, so despite my spontaneous nature and easy going spirit, I get freaked out if things seem too out of control or if things are left completely to chance because that’s when things can go wrong. Answering that you like things planned out in a test pushes you toward being identified as a J trait when maybe you’re really just an anxious person who prefers to have things planned and set in place (where things are less likely to change and go wrong) because if they’re not, your anxiety skyrockets since there’s too much that’s unknown

FJ, Cloverleaf's 1st question ("I am more inclined to... click on the left/ click on the right") was the most intense anxiety inducing question thus far & then they said "That's pretty easy, isn't it?" almost like they're laughing at me for my obvious introvertion 😭

I'm a female hsp istp. I had lots of trouble in my life because I thought something is wrong with me. I like to do things on my own and have a lot of hobbies which are considered to be male activities like programming etc. My environment often gave me the feedback that I do the wrong things in life and behave not nicely and I felt that very deeply due to my hsp. Since I've typed my personality, my life has improved a lot. I'm more confident about myself and don't feel anymore that something is wrong with me when I prefer to do my woodwork instead of reading fashion magazines with the other ladies.

These are some great reasons, Thank You FJ!

I was originally typed as an INFP, and then an ISTJ before I heavily started testing as an ISFJ. Like it didn't budge. I think it's because as I was sorting through my trauma I started understanding myself better. Once I got into cognitive functions, I realized that the ISFJ typing is the correct one and one that, despite not fitting most of the stereotypes, I absolutely love. I love being an ISFJ. I'm sad it's underrated and underappreciated.

I took about 7+ tries of the test to figure out and conclude that I was an ISTP. I got INFP at the start, INTJ after, ISTJ often, and sometimes INTP. And this took a long period of time, months, not like in the span of 5 hours taking the test repeatedly.

The reason why was that I kept asking my friends for their opinion on who I most likely am but not actually thinking about it myself. Turns out I looked like an IxxJ instead of an IxxP. I thought that I was most definitely an ISTx tho.

Descriptions of personality types usually focus on behavior. But cognitive functions aren’t behavior. Yes, they can influence it, but the point about them is explaining how an information gets taken in and processed inside our brain. If one can make a clear distinction between these things, it is likely that one can find the personality type acronym that fits the mental framework one uses.

This actually made me feel better and more confident that I am INFJ, because I took the tests without others around. Plus over the last year+ that I've been into this I've seen it more clearly with new information that comes my way. I did the Clover Leaf, and I did think it was better than the others. As always, thank you for the insights.☺️💜

Thank you, Frank, especially for that last part. The whole point of Typings isn't to worry if you're fitting correctly into a box, it's about understanding yourself and others better.

Ironically, INFP and INFJ can barely be further apart, since none of their functions is the same, nor are the functions at any position of the same type (judging dom vs percieving dom, etc)

As an INTJ that has ALWAYS struggled with cleanliness around my house and actually getting the motivation to take care of the mundane day to day, I always kinda struggled with thinking maybe I was actually an INTP. But once I looked into the cognitive functions, I realized that Ni is like... classic absent minded professor archetype, and INTJs (and INFJs) can be extremely messy.

INTJ here, so proud of me enjoying the team-building we had last summer, I got drunk and had fun! Yes, I had mentally prepared for it in advance! 😂
Anyway I agree that being particular type doesn't mean you can check all the stereotype boxes. I don't like when someone says "this is not an INTJ thing". Healthy and/or matured type would behave differently than unhealthy one. That's why it's important to learn about cognitive functions because that gives you full picture and information to figure out what type you really are. Tests are not perfect and we people often choose answers based on what we think we are expected to be like, so then the results can be even very incorrect.

i think it'd be fun to see the interaction between the introverted thinkers (ISTP, INTP, INTJ, ISTJ), interaction between the introverted feelers (INFP, ISFP, INFJ, ISFJ), interaction between the extroverted thinkers (ENTJ, ESTJ, ENTP, ESTP) and extroverted feelers (ENFP, ESFP, ENFJ, ESFJ)
