I made pemmican a few years back for a multi day backpacking trip. Let me tell you what it worked better than any kind of fancy hiking bar or snickers or any other trail food you can by. Pemmican is more calorie dense by weight, and the calories are mostly from fat so it gives you a real clean long lasting energy burn which is much better that sugar spikes that energy bars give you. Pemmican is an ancient technique and works better than anything modern companies have produced.

My family is mixed native and Spanish cattle herders from central mexico. My great uncle passed about 15 years ago. He lived 110 years. He told me about how him his siblings his dad grandpa and great grandpa would be up in the mountains herding cattle and sheep and goats to sell at the big city (Guadalajara) was a 5 day trip. Theyd eat this but they called it Machaca(Mah-cha-ca) they mixed it with beef fat only as the mountains had figs n pine nuts or theyd boil acorns as oak was plentiful. Once in a blue moon a horse wouldn't make the trip so they'd make horse jerky😂 he then told me after loosing 3 horses 1 trip as it rained heavily 3 years in a row. They switched to mules from then on. He was just 5 years old when he started making those trips 2 times a year but would be up on our mountains weeks at a time herding. Shipping hay was not a commodity available. The obly dirt road for our ranch for cars wasn't made till about the early 1960s. Id give anything to go back. Since then my family ranch has had an upgrade.

As an indigenous person myself i can tell you that when you remember their ways, when you speak of them on their traditional lands, when you walk as they walked and do as they did... They smile upon you.

You honour them.

Thought I'd add a lil bit, considering some of the sentiments being stirred up in the comments.

My initial comment was just a 100% positive thing towards someone who obv likes nature, being out in the wild and using knowledge passed on from like minded people. He referenced the old people so I tipped my hat to that. Cool.

Sometimes it seems like people read too much Into comments on certain topics. Don't. If someone wants to attack you, you'll know about it.

With regards to this topic.. just the word 'indigenous' is enough to trigger some. And yeah, if I was adding fighting words or insults with that then sure, have a dig. But like I say.. this was just a positive post.... So if you can turn that negative that's on you.

To everyone that avoided making a joke about him saying "jerk all the meat and let it harden", I'm proud of you.

I remember eating a bunch of this as a kid. My grandma always had some on hand for foraging days. We'd wander the woods around her house picking berries, pawpaws, mushrooms and pecans. Good times. Thank you for reminding me of a happy time.

Native American survived for thousands of years free on this land and without any treacheries of the modern world. It's a shame that came to an end
