I asked my dentist if I could have braces when I was 14 and she organised my appointment with an orthodontist in another town. I didn't realise some dentists who weren't qualified to do braces actually did them themselves.

This has become such a huge problem in India. I am an orthodontist and I usually get cases that are ruined by general practitioners and it usually costs more and hurts more. I don’t want to sound like an elitist but orthodontics shouldn’t be practiced by general dentists. It involves physics and mechanics. It’s not as simple as it looks.

Yikes! Why would a dentist want to damage their reputation like that? It make zero sense. Specially when you consider the fact most people hate going to the dentist anyway…When I was a teenager my dentist referred me to an orthodontist to get my braces. Not too long ago my daughters dentist recommended an orthodontist for her. Speaks volumes to their integrity vs that charlatan.

When I see videos like this I always remember my dental office. Three people work at the place: the ‘main’ dentist, who is also an orthodontist, his sister, who makes the studies and stuff for implants and oral surgery, and one more dentist that makes endodoncies. One time I asked for a visit in the morning instead of my usual evening and my orthodontist said we couldn’t because he was not going to be there said morning: ‘unless you want to be seen by my sister, who doesn’t even know how to glue back a loose bracket’. Those words made me realize so many things!

I've been in braces for 15 months now and my biggest mistake was going to a dentist for braces, he pulled out my lower front teeth like 4 months ago and I could really see no improvement, the gap wasn't closing, my bite wasn't fixed so i thought to change my dentist and after some time i saw this video and i was shocked. Few days ago i went to an orthodontist and he told me that my dentist has been doing this all wrong there was no need for the lower tooth extraction 😭 he's one of the best orthodontist and I'd be continuing my treatment from there. He's told me that he'll fix my teeth in a few months and that I'll be happy with my smile later on. Hoping for the best T-T
Edit: I finally went to the orthodontist and also got powerchains it hurts like hell but anything for straight teeth :P
Update: My overbite has been fixed and I absolutely love my teeth now. Getting braces off in 2 months
UPDATE 2: I GOT MY BRACES OFF AFTER 2 FREAKIN YEARS AND I LOVE MY SMILE SM😭

Dentist: "let me put braces on your teeth to correct your teeth alignment"
Me: "ABSOLUTELY NOT!"
The Bentist: "let me put braces on your teeth to correct your teeth alignment"
Me: "Absolutely. Anything for you, Dr. Winters"

Basically, people should know that an orthodontist and dentist have separate specialties. For hygiene and cavities, go to a dentist. For crooked, misaligned teeth, go to an orthodontist.

Being a general dentist i would definitely advise people to consult an orthodontist. Its true that in dental college, we are not taught much about brackets and all.
Rootcanal, extractions, cleaning, prosthesis etc are one of the things that we learn to do since our college days so its a duty of a general dentist to refer ortho patients to orthodontist than being selfish to earn few extra bucks. If the case is easy, then you are saved by your luck. But what if its not, wat if u make it worse.. Do not try to do things that are not ur forte.

I agree with this. As a dental assistant who specializes in ortho and pedo, leave alignment up to orthodontists only. regular dentists who try and do braces typically suck or take way too long on your case.

This makes me glad I went to an orthodontist instead of my general dentist for my braces, because this orthodontist can help align my teeth the right, I’ve been in braces for 5 months so far, have an adjustment coming up soon

I have anterior open bite. The first time I went to a dentist, she said she can't do my case. So she referred me to an orthodontist. I'm glad she's not trying to do what she can't do and let the professionals do it for me. I'm on my 3rd year now and my teeth looks nice. I think I will be removing my braces this year 😍

wow i’m from germany and this really shocked me. here a lot more people get braces than need it but i’ve never seen it go wrong. it’s just because health insurance pays a big amount of it and 99, 9% of germanys population have a health insurance. i don’t know when or how or even if the dental med studs learn it in med school but it seems to work…

I think this is more common than people think. When I was about 14 I got traintrack braces done by my dentist. At the time, I didn't know any better nor did my parents. I think for my parents, they thought it was convenient as all my appointments would be done at the same place and they didn't have to keep track of another doctor (I was seeing about 4 different doctors at the time for various medical issues) and my parents knew our dental office took my mom's insurance. It wasn't until about 10 years later, that I learned that my dentist should've recommended me to an orthodontist. It wasn't like there weren't orthodontists in our area at the time. There were at least 4–5 just in my town. I learned this because my job did some design work for one of the offices in town.

This isn't to say that my dentist screwed up my teeth, my top teeth were beautiful. But my bottom teeth were a different story. The only thing my dentist managed to fix was my deep bite. I am now 31 and I am seeing an orthodontist (recommended by my new dentist) who looked at my teeth and my old wire retainers (they called them 'acrylics') and pointed out on my bottom retainer, my teeth were STILL crowded after my "completed" treatment. He also pointed out to me that there's actually a space in my top retaniner that was meant to keep gaps open between my canines, which I catch on sometimes when I floss and food gets stuck in the gaps all the time.

Anyway, if your dentist insists on doing the braces at their office, do more research into actual board-certified orthodontists in your area so you don't end up like the person in the video or like me, who is now getting invisalign 16 years later. I will say that I have much more confidence in my new orthodontist than I ever did in my dentist.

I spent $9k on Invisalign with an actual orthodontist and still ended up with teeth less pretty and don’t line up as properly to chew as before I started. 😡 I guess my guy just have been last in his class…

how the hell is dentists without any orthodontist training putting brackets on people's teeth even legal? it seems so criminal that this even happens. imagine your general surgeon doing your rhinoplasty instead of a plastic surgeon. sounds like a nightmare

I’m so grateful for people like you and dentists everywhere. They gave me my life back after a childhood injury.

Boy you’d live my case.

Lost my two front adult teeth at 7 from a baseball. We just all dealt with it after learning the teeth couldn’t be saved. Once my tooth gap narrowed, I had to get braces (to include a spacer) so I could get a retainer with fake teeth.

Couldn’t get implants until I was 21 so I had to get braces.

Come my 22nd birthday, my normal dentist referred me to a personal maxilofacial surgeon.

The surgeon (Michael Pikos in Trinity, FL) found out my sinus cavity was eroded, with a 3d scan, and I had a very slim chance at getting OSSTEM implants. I was able to suck air through my nose into my mouth at this time.

Had to under go jaw bone graft surgery, mesh implants, and recovery time before I could even get implants (that also had to to be custom abutments). They also had to remove (only one but we decided both for symmetry) my lateral incisors bc the root wasn’t even connected to the jaw bone.

He offered me to be a case study and I’d only be billed for supplies. So a $20k+ surgery only costed me $5k (including insurance)

Keep the world smiling!!

I have been watching your videos for some time now and I’m wondering if you ever are taught about work/collegial ethics in the US universities. We dentists in Europe try not to judge another dentist’s work before we know what the case really was. If we see the patient in the chair and see what we think was a mistake we contact the dentist first before telling the patient ‘wtf has he/she done to your teeth’.
