As an aspiring Oligarch (I made an Oligarch Vision Board) I would sincerely protest the portrayal of my (future) people in this way. I will be a Compassionate Oligarch. I shall spread my immense untaxable wealth to all three branches of the Government. Quid Pro Quo is such a dated term - I mean its a dead language am I right? I prefer Payola. Its shorter, for one, and I seek efficiency in all endeavors. I will of course be creating full backstories to allow my toadies to be well positioned with minimal pushback. Expect autobiographies (written by ghost writers) documenting humble beginnings, family values, religious moments in times of tribulation and whatever topical attacks are hot buttons at the time of publishing. A good backstory, regardless of embellishment and inaccuracy goes a long way. It creates the book tour that we will use to prop up the toadie for easy public consumption. Boy this oligarch stuff is hard work. Are there non profits (I insist on write offs) or think tanks that I could outsource this to? Someone well connected on The Hill and in K Street? I will spin up a couple shell companies (on and off shore) to keep my distance and name out of it. Ya know sometimes things get messy. Oh an oligarchs work is never done. I already miss being a peasant. Nah. Just kidding.

His book is very good. Oligarchies don't revert back to democracies or other types of polities. Britain, France, Spain, Rome, and other nations were once strong but today are dead or dying. We became an empire during WW2 and already we are in collapse. Oligarchs survive for a while until other oligarchs replace them, but in the end the residual middle class dies.

I was blessed with a liberal arts education. I have seen it not only come to naught but increasingly disparaged over the decades. I don't blame my education for the failing, but I do blame the deteriorating values of modern society. I've watched in dismay as the powerful have supported this diminishment of humanistic, rational, moral and aesthetic value.
