The Indian flag is one of the only national flags with the colour orange on it. The Dutch one used to have it too, but no more. What happened to the old Indian flag, and what was the British Indian Raj flag based on?

Watched RRR the other day and it ends with a musical number where they wave the very early nationalist flag of india. Was very interesting to learn about. It actually predates the one you show and has the eight lotuses on it.

Ashok Chakra was an important symbol used by Emperor Ashoka of the massive Mauryan Empire (when a united India was at its largest extent ever). This chakra is present on the 2 millennia old Lion Capital at Sarnath whose ruins survived till modern era. The Lion Capital was chosen to be the National Emblem (coat of arms) of independent India, and the chakra on that lion capital was placed on the flag.

There are a few more flags from the independence movement, such as the first flag besigned by Sister Nivedita in 1904, or the Calcutta flag. Also the home rule flag raised by Bal Gangadhar Tilak was influential.
As a side note, the congress flag with the spinning wheel was used as the flag for the Provisional Azad Hind (Free India) government under Subhash Chandra Bose with help from the japanese during the second Big Kerfuffle.

They used the Ashok Chakra because under him in the Mauryan Empire India was at its greatest extent

The Ashoka Chakra is also important because the first time India united as a country was 2000 years ago under the Mauryan emperor Ashoka, the chakra was a symbol used in that period. I think this is a important point that was missed in the video.

I just find it astounding that a company in those days could go out and literally conquer parts of the world and that it was legal

Hello Hilbert. I have mentioned before that there were rumours of Indian ancestry from part of my family that were said to have served in India. I was also the kind of kid who loved knowing country flags, so this was a very enjoyable watch and I learned from it too.

Bengal is not the northeast of India. It is just east. The "Seven Sisters and one brother" region comprising of Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura is the northeast of India.

Well, I think they did it for the symmetry, that's why added Ashoka chakra, also emperor Ashoka centralised India infact with 50% more terroritory than Modern India and modern india still takes inspiration from ancient India or "akhand Bharat".

The Dharmachakra (the Eternal Wheel of Law) is a MUCH better representative of India than that old weird symbol, and it helps invoke empathy for India from lots of Buddhist societies also. :)

There were 6 unifiers of India, 5 before british. Concept of indian state has been alive since Ashoka.

The second one (with a loom at the centre) was adopted by Azad Hind ("Free India") & the Indian National Army under the leadership of Subhas Chandra Bose in collaboration with the Axis powers during WW2.

Any reason why a few British colonies, like India or Canada, had a red background on their flag, but most others were blue?

As an Indian, there's something that makes me feel proud whenever I see the flag.

And honestly I'm glad nobody considering Mountbatten's plan to change the India and Pakistan flags.

Look it up, it's just the India and Pakistan flags with the British watermark on the top left. It looks so ugly man.

I love how the Indian leaders foresaw the issues that could arise by assigning colors to represent certain religions and immediately corrected it to show that all Indians are one. That's true visionary leadership! ❤
