Hi Dan. Useful tip.
My personal rule-of-thumb is this: use a saw! For me a saw is the primary tool, after the knife/knives. [I don't do axes!]
Second tip: search for wood in the sizes you'll need for whatever the intended use is, thus reducing the need to split logs. If there is thick wood lying around, there is a very good chance that there is thinner stuff there too. Collect it in usable sizes - less processing. Round logs burn hotter, for longer, and make better coals than split wood.
Good vid!
Cheers!

Great tip Dan. Another technique that doesn't get much attention is first to strike the blade directly above where it crosses the wood until the spine is sunk level with the wood. THEN start striking the tip to continue. Less hand shock because the knife won't try to pivot, and it puts less stress on the blade during that tough initial batoning before the wood gives that first crack to follow and complete the split.

I've seen that method used when processing wood with an axe, but never thought to try it with a knife. Excellent! Thanks for sharing that tip.

Thanks for sharing! It is the little things that all experienced people do automatically that never get captured. Even I went "DUH" on this one. I do it all of the time yet I don't think I ever thought to TELL someone to just turn the stick sideways. You just saved me from turning into my parents by saying " just turn the darn thing sideways, don't you have any common sense." Thanks for the reminder to be more mindful that the tiniest detail makes a big difference in more ways than one.

Nice tip! In tropical areas (e.g. South America), wood tends to be very hard and that job may take a little longer though. Thanks for sharing that! Thumbs up!
