handy baton for bushcraft

This is how I make my batons for bushcraft. It is very handy to baton wood with and for making firewood. I believe a similar tool is used by woodcarvers

If you have hardwood trees in your area it's best to use hardwood. Just a helpful tip.

Very nice! What is your favorite folding saw? And do you think it's better to go out with a knife/saw as opposed to a knife/axe? How often do you find yourself using the saw compared to knives?

Check out my designing a better baton video. It's a change from the traditional design that is less prone to damage your knife blade. I hope it changes the way folks make their batons.

Considering the year this video was make and understanding these were your first steps into bushcraft I don't really blame you for your mistake between a baton and a wooden mallet and mistaking bushcraft for backyard projects.
Are you gonna carry this thing around in your backpack or find a baton to make a mallet in every base camp?
The size of it actually is not functional for batoning with knives. A way smaller diameter will be much easier for hitting the part of the knife sticking out with force because this big diameter will hit first at the center of it and that's often even outside where te tip of the blade is so it rolls off.
This is a good demonstration on how you can steal a name but not the skills. They will always show. ;)
