Kings and Generals animated historical documentary series on the history of Islam and the Balkans continues with a video exploring how Bosnia became Muslim. The Balkans have long been a frontier of cultures, where East meets West. In this video, we explore the unique history of Bosnia and Herzegovina, focusing on the conquest of Bosnia by the Ottomans and how Islam took root in the region. We examine theories behind Bosnia’s Islamization, from economic benefits to the influence of Sufi orders, which shaped religious life. As Bosnia became an Ottoman stronghold, we delve into the role of Bosnian Muslims in economy and administration, highlighting the rise of military and merchant elites. The 19th century brought the Tanzimat reforms and Habsburg rule, leading to resistance, migration, and the emergence of a distinct Bosniak identity. Join us as we uncover the rich and complex history of Islam in Bosnia, a land of deep cultural diversity and historical significance.

I love Zizek's account of where the Balkans begin. For the Slovene, it is down there in Croatia. For the Croatian, it is down there in Serbia. For the Serb, it is in the mountains of Bosnia. For the Greeks, the Balkans are everything up there. And he ends by saying that for the British, all Europe is the Balkans.

I served in Bosnia as a NATO Peacekeeper in 97-98 and was there for their first elections. We used to trade with the locals all the time. Really nice people.

Considering it’s the Balkans, the comments are gonna be interesting under this one.

I’m from St. Louis, Missouri in the US. We have the largest Bosnian population of any us city (by percentage of the population) who all came here fleeing the atrocities of the 90s. I got to know many of them playing football (soccer), they are really good people, top footballers, and totally revived the run down neighborhood of Bevo Mill

Edit: according to google we have the largest Bosnian community outside of Bosnia & Herzegovina, not just by percentage

Perhaps it is better to question why this same process of Islamization did not happen in other parts of the Ottoman Balkans

We have lots of Turkish citizens with Bosnian descent. They are great people with sad stories...

Turks indeed had a decisive role in triggering historical major events like the Migration Period, Crusades, Age of Discovery, Islamization of Balkans & Indian subcontinent as well as ending the Middle Ages with the conquest of Constantinople, fall of the Roman Empire.

As someone who was born on the Drina and was forced to flee my home, the last part really struck me in my heart.

As someone who is Bosniak, and whos favourite songwriter was Balašević. i can't say enough how much i appreciate the effort to explain everything in one video. Truly we have tremendous history, even WW1 started in Sarajevo, and many of the ward took place in Bosnia unfortunatelly, but Bosnia still remains, and it will always!

I'm Bosnian catholic and I recommend you to visit churches in Fojnica and Kraljeva Sutjeska. They have museum of medieval history. You will be surprised how many times were these churches demolished by Ottomans, but built again. That all says how "well protected" catholics were... We were one ethnic group in medieval time called Bošnjani, but unfortunately religion differences made 3 nations here. And you won't believe, many Bosnian muslims unfortunately don't see Ottomans as occupators, although they killed our last king

Interesting video, and well done. However, I don't understand why there is no mention that the Christians had to pay a Jizya (an extra tax on top of the normal agricultural tax, so i dont want to hear the everyone pays taxes excuse, when this was an EXTRA tax on top of the normal, regular tax all citizens paid) and that they also had social and legal restrictions.

While yes, they did have freedom of religion, they would have to live at a severe disadvantage because of it. Such has no riding of horses in the presence of muslims or certain streets (instead they had to ride donkeys or mules), having to wear "distinctive clothing", being seen as lesser in the court of law (so having no chance against a muslim in court, not allowed to testify against muslims and even receiving harsher punishments) and many other things.

I feel as if this would've been important to mention in the video, as im sure being treated as a second-class citizen is a big reason for many to convert, as they weren't forced but indirectly coerced.
