Bizarre Facts About The Druids

preview_player
Показать описание
The Druids were either an intellectual class or priestly class of Celts living in Gaul (a region that encompassed the majority of Western Europe and the British isles) around 1200-600 BCE and beyond. While modern neo-Druids have a tree-hugging, pagan, hippie vibe, the reality is that the original, historical Druids are sort of a mystery. Scholarly research and historical accounts suggest, though, that the Druids were more intellectual than they were religious, and that they spent more time establishing a socially just society than they did worshipping at places like Stonehenge, which, spoiler, wasn't even theirs. But what little we do know about Druid history and Druid beliefs is pretty fascinating.

Ancient Indo-European texts do talk about a race called Druhyu, literally meaning 'seers', they had red hair. The date is around 2000BCE, when the IVC was still kicking and the Indo-Europeans were yet to migrate into West Europe or India. I don't know if the Druids are Druhyu. But the Celts migrated and expanded into Europe, that's proven.

If you want to know more about the druids there are plenty of Irish texts available, we we're never conquered by Rome and so their history was recorded by the first Catholic monks in the monasteries here. Before they slowly eradicated the ancient culture.

If you want to see real modern “druids” - there’s a thing called the Eisteddfod in Wales! My dad’s a druid and they meet every year at Europe’s largest cultural festival of its kind! Would love a video on it :)

From the few sources available about the Druids, many of them being much later recountings of oral histories from areas outside of the Roman rule, is that the Druids were a class of teachers and leaders with some specialising in certain roles like military leadership. While some stayed in small areas, others roamed spreading their knowledge among the people. Since the Romans thrived on restricting knowledge as they saw that as power, a group who spread knowledge was a group the Romans had to destroy. Demonisation of them by the Romans was the first step in cutting the Druids off from their supporting peoples.

Fun Fact: Stonehenge is so large because of hastily written instructions on a napkin, leading to an error in units of measurement.

Me going into this video: "Yeah, I'd make a great Druid. I'm all about Mother Nature, and I love the outdoors!"
Me after this video: "10 years of memorizing oral lists? I'd be the worst Druid ever!"
