Why Moldova is the Poorest Country in Europe
Показать описание
Moldova's economy is the poorest in Europe. While they have been performing well over the last 30 years, their GDP per capita is still one of the lowest and is 13 times poorer than the United States.
Moldova has gone through a ton of problems over the last few years. The Covid epidemic, an energy crisis, and a huge influx of refugees from the Russia Ukraine war. Moldova also has a very unstable population as lots of people are leaving the country. Moldova's population has decreased by over 30% since 1989, and in 15 years it will only be half! These are the worst demographic stats across Europe. They also have declining fertility rates, which is increasing the proportion of older people and there are not enough young people to support them.
Moldova also gets hit by frequent natural disasters such as earthquakes and flooding. The majority of their population lives in rural areas, meaning that when catastrophes strike it makes it harder to reach people and risks losing up to 3% of their GDP for any reconstruction.
But they are in a better situation than they used to. Since its independence in 1991, Moldova has come a long way toward becoming a stronger democracy. To support this transition, it started health and social safety net programs, promoted democratic processes, and assisted in restructuring and privatising important businesses to boost economic growth. For the last 10 years Moldova’s development has advanced really well. The percentage of people living in poverty went from 23% in 2010 to 9% in 2018.
