Why Moldova is the Poorest Country in Europe

Moldova's economy is the poorest in Europe. While they have been performing well over the last 30 years, their GDP per capita is still one of the lowest and is 13 times poorer than the United States.

Moldova has gone through a ton of problems over the last few years. The Covid epidemic, an energy crisis, and a huge influx of refugees from the Russia Ukraine war. Moldova also has a very unstable population as lots of people are leaving the country. Moldova's population has decreased by over 30% since 1989, and in 15 years it will only be half! These are the worst demographic stats across Europe. They also have declining fertility rates, which is increasing the proportion of older people and there are not enough young people to support them.

Moldova also gets hit by frequent natural disasters such as earthquakes and flooding. The majority of their population lives in rural areas, meaning that when catastrophes strike it makes it harder to reach people and risks losing up to 3% of their GDP for any reconstruction.

But they are in a better situation than they used to. Since its independence in 1991, Moldova has come a long way toward becoming a stronger democracy. To support this transition, it started health and social safety net programs, promoted democratic processes, and assisted in restructuring and privatising important businesses to boost economic growth. For the last 10 years Moldova’s development has advanced really well. The percentage of people living in poverty went from 23% in 2010 to 9% in 2018.

1:15 Bro, *where* do you get these statistics? Acc to the *IMF* and *World Bank, * Moldova's GDP/capita is:

2023 (IMF): $6, 411
2022 (WB): $5, 714

This places it above Kosovo & Ukraine in Europe. And it's the same when adjusted by PPP. So what is this? You're pulling data from 10 years ago?

New Ukraine should give Moldova that plot of land along the ocean.

How do you expect to have a functioning government and all social standards of Western Europe with an average tax rate of 50% and almost everyone is paying it, when no one is paying any taxes in Moldova, it's just a flat rate of 12% and on top of that, I'm guessing tax evasion rate in Moldova is just as bad as places like Italy and Greece where 60-70% of people don't even pay any taxes at all.

I have never heard about earthquakes in Moldavia. At least dangerous ones. But I have travelled across Moldavia in my childhood in the 70s-80s a lot. Even though the living standard in the USSR was high including Moldavia this applied only to urban areas in Moldavia where primarily Russian people lived and worked. Countryside was so terrible you cannot even imagine. If you see children selling fruit on the side of the road and stop you are in a big trouble. You car won't have anything which can be torn off or taken in a matter of seconds. Nowhere in the USSR this could happen. Moldavia is poor because they don't have a donor Russia anymore and the local population is completely uneducated and can't produce anything decent.

I'm pretty sure Ukraine is Europe's poorest country. Also, the GDP per capita list that you show is false. Russia is poorer than Romania in GDP per capita according to all economic metrics.

Well, Moldova is 4th by fertility rate in Europe and if we take away micro nations (Faroe Islands isn't even a country, Gibraltar neither, both are part of UK and Monaco is just a microstate for rich), Moldova is actually in the top. Europe is becoming more and more irrelevant as the time passes by.

When I look at our Food Industries in Germany where 20-30% of employees come from Moldova, that let me think that there are no people left to work in Moldova because they’re all here 🤔
