DONATE your old towels (and blankets and sheets) to your local animal rescue/shelters after checking with them. They usually NEED them and they wll be grateful and you will have helped them! Then buy new ones for yourself.

The issue I have with microfibre is the micro plastics going to the ocean, and surfacing in fish we eat. I wish I was exaggerating. Cotton fibres are more natural and safer. Scratchy or not

I periodically put vinegar in the rinse cycle. I don't use fabric softener.
My favorite towels are the large thin Turkish towels. They don't take as long to dry. 🎉

I’ve used vinegar in the fabric softener dispenser for two decades and so far, no issues with the gaskets.

We've had our cotton terry towels for 25 years, same set. We've had our he washing machine for 25 years also. We've never used fabric softenerbecause it coats everthing. It makes towels less absorbant, and they don't feel fresh to me when they are coated. We have six sets of towels between two of us and we change the towels out after using them 3-4 times. We live in Arizona, where the air is super dry. It keeps the towels fresher longer.

I change bath towels after 3 showers and usually do the hand towels at the same time. Facecloths are a one use item and kitchen towels every evening after cleaning up for the night. I use vinegar in the rinse cycle and dryer balls.

I use bath towels and washcloths once. I use hand towels for a week unless it is a really humid summer and they don’t feel dry when I go to use them again.

There is an amazing person in the cleaning world. Her name is Vanessa Amaro, but she talks about never use fabric softener on towels because the reason is it gets a substance of waxy. And when it’s waxy, it’s really like not a good feel on the towels.

I live in Texas and the water is super hard. Therefore, I don't use detergent on my towels. Instead I do one hot cycle with baking soda, and one with vinegar. That helps to remove the hard water buildup, and my towels are clean. It's also a mini rinse of the washing machine to get rid of any soap residue in the machine.

Backing soda, vinegar, washing parfume or oil, like teetree helps. I clean my washing mashine 2x in a months, or when it is needed and I hang my towels out before puting them on their place. Bacteria start to increase on towels after 3 days (there are videos about this with laboratory analisyses) so I change my towels also every 3rd day at least.
