A solitary drone repairman working on a war-ravaged planet Earth becomes humanity's last hope for survival in this ambitious sci-fi epic from Tron Legacy director Joseph Kosinski, and Rise of the Planet of the Apes producer Peter Chernin. In the distant future, planet Earth has been decimated by an intergalactic battle against an alien race known as the Scavs. The majority of the mankind has been evacuated, leaving just a few solitary drone repairmen remaining on the planet's surface. Their job is simple - stand guard over the ruins of a once-great empire by patrolling the skies, and ensuring the drones continue to function. Jack Harper (Tom Cruise) is nearing the end of his mission to extract resources essential to the survival of the human race when he witnesses a spacecraft fall from the sky. Upon investigating, Jack discovers the capsule contains a mysterious woman. With mission control watching his every move from high up above the clouds, Jack embarks on a spectacular adventure that will not only challenge everything he's been taught about mankind's most defining battle, but perhaps alter the entire course of human history. I absolutely loved this movie. Don't think it ever got the recognition it deserved.

Loved this twist.
It was foreshadowed a lot and if you watch the movie a second time you pick up on these details.

But as a first watch you do believe Sally is really human and the "Scavs" are the actual aliens (their weird costumes enforce that idea)

But with a second watch you notice the extreme menacing and almost alien sound the drones make, the fact Sally is real robotlike and if you listen very closely you hear the Scavs communicate in English.

Imo this movie was a criminally underrated modern sci fi classic.

sadly, this is what happens when directors dare to deviate from the 'standard' cookie cutter formula and give us something a bit different, it gets poor reception.

You know I watched this movie 10 mins back and has already become one of my favorite sci-fi films with Interstellar, Arrival, 2001, Matrix etc. I spotted some unusual acting by Sally(human) in the video messages and I ignored it. But when I saw this scene I was like HOLD TF UP WHAT'S GOING ON
