Hundreds of whales die in mass stranding

Over 400 pilot whales have died after becoming stranded on the remote Chatham Islands off the coast of New Zealand.

Sky News New Zealand Bureau Chief Jessica Maggio said the incident occurred over two separate events with around 230 whales hitting the shores on Friday and a further 245 on Monday.

She said due to the water surrounding the island being infested with sharks, marine biologists don’t typically re-float pilot whales that become stranded in the area.

“400 died naturally whereas a further 77 had to be euthanised - which is the humane thing to do in this instance,” she said.

It's called sonar that the military uses in the area it messes with the whales sense of direction and causes them to panic .

Why can’t helicopters lift these whales back into the water. This is horrible! Humans were probably using horrible Sonics and put these whales off course. The huge storms beach them. World wildlife fund gets millions upon millions to help animals in the wild. But just stand back say oh dear it’s happened again and do absolutely nothing!!

there is a low frequency system they used to experiment with but ceased that testing because of potential whale beaching events.. that's not to say china isn't testing it.. it was to communicate with submerged submarines
