This last occurred in March of 2009. There is a correlation between then and now. It has to do with the solar cycle. March of 2009 was the very end of the minimum of solar cycle #23. This is also where we stand today at this time which is at the very end of solar cycle #24, and the start of SC25. Both of these last two solar minimum periods have been exceptionally long and deep. This year, in particular, is the deepest solar minimum since 1913. Is there some connection between these extra deep solar cycles which has an effect on whales? First thought would be does it interfere with the whales ability to sense direction which is typically a function that is dependent on detecting magnetic fields. Right now the sun's magnetic flux is at historical lows just as they were in 2009. There is no question that the manetic field of the sun influences the magnetic field of the Earth, and all other planets with magnetic fields.
