Christian Denominations Compared: Pietists

Lutheran Pietism has been the origin of many denominations across the world today, but many people are unfamiliar with this story. In this video we'll compare the Evangelical Free Church of America, Evangelical Covenant Church, Church of the Lutheran Brethren, and Converge.

My Grandpa was a pastor in the EFCA, my Mom grew up in the Covenant Church, and my family in general descends from Swedish and Norwegian immigrants, so thank you for highlighting these couple of church groups with a common background. I grew up in the EFCA, but nowadays I work in an ELCA church (although I am not a member), and it's fun for me to know that my faith growing up had at least some historical connection to the Lutherans.

My favorite are Blueberry Pietists, although Apple or Cherry Pietists are excellent as well.

Pretty much any of the various Fruit Pietists are usually quite good.

I was a part of the Rocky Mountain district for the EFCA for a while and they don’t really encourage abstinence of alcohol. Every conference, we would all head to a brewery after for beers.

Have you heard of Covenanters ?
If so who are they?
They’ve obviously been around in the 20th century in the uk
I’m not sure whether they are related to historical Scottish Covenanters
It seems they have/had some expectations of their followers that were based on attainment in order to get to heaven 🤔
I can’t find any further information on them other than anecdotal

In my mind pietism goes beyond the characteristics that you mentioned. To me it connotes things like: not preparing sermons because a man of God will be impromptu inspired to preach, not soliciting contributions as the Lord will miraculously provide, not paying for insurance, because God will insure you, not going to a doctor because the Lord will heal you, being scrupulous, not watching TV, not playing cards, making Sunday into a Sabbath (no work, don't study if a student), not wearing shorts, no mixed swimming.

I grew up around EFCA and CLB. Very cool to see it all side by side. Just wish the free Lutherans were included too.

EFCA may not have confirmation but they do have a Bible instruction class that effectively is confirmation. I simultaneously went through Bible instruction in the EFCA and confirmation in the CLB.

My only concern with the irenic spirit is who gets to decide what is and is not a secondary issue? It could lead to relativism. Is soteriology a secondary issues. I don’t think it is.

It's no wonder unbelievers - and even believers - are confused about the Christian faith. This video covers only four small "denominations", and beliefs vary on a lot of things. The church universal is in disarray.
