The Sumerians were a people of ancient Mesopotamia who developed the first civilization in the world. They built the first true cities, developed the earliest writing system, and made advancements in numerous fields such as agriculture, toolmaking, and architecture. Their influence laid the foundations for nearly all the civilizations that later emerged in the Near East, Europe and North Africa.

Great work! It was refreshing to see an analysis focused on the earliest stages of Mesopotamian religion and mythology. This topic is often overshadowed by the 'Babylonian perspective' in lectures and popular history. Even Gilgamesh, the greatest Sumerian hero, is primarily known today through the later Babylonian epics.

what a fascinating video! i really enjoyed the depth you went into about Sumerian culture. however, i can't help but wonder if the portrayal of their society might be a bit oversimplified. i mean, there’s so much complexity in their beliefs and practices that doesn’t always get highlighted. it’d be cool to see more about the nuances of their daily lives and interactions, don’t you think?

I really like the theory that the Sumerians came out of the Persian Guild region before the last Ice Age when the ice thaw raised water levels around the world. The Persian Gulf valley would have filled in quickly and horrifically to anyone living in that valley, and this experience would inspire a Great Flood myth just as the Sumerians did.
