Big fan - I watch all your videos and this one is great as always. That said, I just wanna jump into the convo and say that if an applicant lives in the US, they may not want to put their photo on their resume unless they’re an actor. America has Equal Employment Opportunity laws (employers can’t discriminate against race, gender, age, religion, etc.), so many HR and hiring managers are not allowed to accept resumes with photos in order to avoid any legal issues pertaining to unconscious bias. 🙏🏻💛

How I landed my dream job:
Step 1: Realize I'm too opinionated to work for someone else.
Step 2: Quit.
Step 3: Start my own business(es).

19 years and counting! 💪🏻

The best part of your video is the idea to customize your resume to the job! YES! It is one of the main things that I tell my clients. Your resume is never really about you - it is about what they need. Getting people to leave out what the hirer is not interested in, is often a challenge. "A confused buyer always says no", so target your resume to what they want.

However, there is a customization that you haven't thought of, that could make a huge difference to many of your viewers. It's all very well to use a template with graphics, idiosyncratic fonts and a columns-based or tables-based layout when you are sending your resume to a small company when you absolutely KNOW a real person will look at your resume, or as the basis of an EPK or creative's One Sheet. It is also useful to upload to LinkedIn along with all the other optimizations you can do there.

Unfortunately, most of the tips you mention (other than customizing) will get those resumes tossed (as unreadable) by any company that uses an ATS (Applicant Tracking System). Rule of thumb - if the company has an HR department or uses an online job application, they are almost certainly using an ATS. Once the province of major corporations with hundreds of employees, these ATS companies are now specifically targeting smaller and smaller businesses with their human resource management softwares. You have to get past the ATS before a human ever sees your document, or clicks your link.

Putting a photo on a resume is a European thing. As others have said, in the USA many companies actually have a policy against it; it is not considered usual here, and can actually get your resume tossed because of fears of appearing biased. This may change with time because of social media and people having a visible presence in the world, but we aren't there yet. BTW 93% of hirers admit that they check a candidate's personal social media presence before making hiring decisions. Having no presence is as much of a red flag as having the wrong kind of visibility (eg lots of drunken behavior.)

Another odd and brand new thing in HR is a policy against providing references or allowing supervisors to provide references, citing "privacy". This is going to start making a difference to people after a while. I don't like it much. It's something to watch.

Video resumes ARE becoming a thing in certain industries as an adjunct to the resume - but again, the ATS won't look at those links. It depends entirely on the company to which you are applying. Most of the time hirers will click on one link, and you don't want to confuse them with too many choices. So use your best link carefully - for some situations you might be better off having it link to your portfolio or reel (if they have specified that in the job listing) than a video presentation just of you. Otherwise they say, "I'll look at those links later", and that is deadly, because they often won't.

Remember folks, the function of a resume is to get you an interview. You get the job. The truth is, it is never "one and done". You need more than one for different purposes, with different formatting. And the biggest factor to getting a gig is still personal referrals. A referral trumps an ATS all day long. Network, network, network.

Amy, now I'd love to see a video about your best job interview tips after your hiring process. What most impressed you, and what were candidates' biggest errors?

All that being said, I can hardly wait to read your next book! I hope you will read it as an audio book like the wonderful "Vlog Like a Boss".

I landed THE dream job!
1: I showed up to the interview (virtual)
2: Tech was a B & didn't want to work, so I called in instead of the Zoom meeting.
3: Because the point of Zoom is a face to face, I recorded a video to introduce myself & apologize for tech issues.
4: Followed with thank you email
5: Responded to request for extra info super fast. <3

Hi Amy,
I have to say I never realized this until I watched your video. When I went on my first date with a young man from a computer dating service (Note: This was 1984. The internet was at least 5 years away.) I was VERY nervous to meet him. This dinner date did not go too well, I thought, so I wrote him a letter apologizing for my faults. That was Tuesday/Wednesday and he asked me on a second date for Saturday.
Later, he told me that it was the letter that made the difference! He proposed in June of 1984, we were married in January of 1985 and spent 32 wonderful years together before he lost his battle with kidney failure. It's only been 3 years, but I still cry when I think of him and how much I miss him.
So, if you think only "jobs" need a thank you note, try one when you go on a date with a possible special someone.

This inspired me so much that I ran with it without rewatching the video! I actually made a website with an about me section, a "resume" with what my favorite parts of each job were and a blog post about why I want to work for that company. Is it overkill, maybe. It was sure fun though! Maybe it will pay off one day! :)

That tldr video idea is so ingenious. Im actually having an interview with the dream company I want to work at this Tuesday. Ive already interviewed there for a different department but I was picked over due to someone having more experience. But even if I dont get the job I will be using your tips in the future!
I do have a question on how to say thank you when its a big Corporation and there isnt a personal way to say thank you. Ive just said my thanks and appreciation to the recruiter and hoped she passed it on but yeah its a struggle.

THANK YOU SO MUCH for this! I've been procrastinating applying for my dream start up (for like nearly a whole year!), and this definitely feels like the push I need. I hope to update in a week or two on me FINALLY having submitted the bloody application.

1. Realize the skills that you can use I hand.
2. Ask if you could use them in any capacity.
3. Execute the job performance.

This is what happened with me recently. I exchange for my services, I got a membership out of the deal.

I always send thank you notes. I stand out and if they don't hire me, maybe they feel a little guilty 😎

This is by far one of your best videos, ever. The custom URL?! Genius. Adding a short video? In today's world, totally makes sense. It would have been amazing 10 years ago. I don't keep my social media under my real name. There are certain people I don't need finding me, bosses included. Not that I do/say bad things...just that there are bad people in the world, and best to stay as private as possible. Right now I'm at a job I LOVE, but you got me thinking that it would be wise to update the resume AND update my profile on the company page (hasn't been changed in the 6 years I've been here. If only I knew how to blow my own horn.

Not normally a fan of the particular sponsors you choose, but I've always liked picmonkey, and I'm very pleased with all the great tips from this one!
