The breed standard for Highland cattle was created in 1885. Breeding stock has been exported to many other continents beginning in the 1900s, including Australia and North America. Highland Cattle or Heilan Coo in Scots, comes from the Gaelic translation of Ghaidhealach. Officially, the Scottish winter runs from the 21st of December through to the 20th March.
