Anthony Newley - Who Can I Turn To

Here's a track which is probably best associated with Tony Bennett...but, this is the original recorded version, from the man who co-wrote it...Anthony Newley.

Anthony introduced the song in the 1964 London production of "The Roar Of The Greasepaint, The Smell Of The Crowd", which I've also considered to be one of the GREAT titles!!!
Unfortunately, the show wasn't the success it's backers had hoped for, and it took a New York season, and Tony Bennett, to turn it's fortunes around.

This version, by Anthony Newley was also released in the US on an RCA 45, 47-8485...
...and, this upload is from that original 45.

This and all of the other Bricusse/Newley songs this man just throws off his shoulder - no histrionics - probably the most incredible stage performer ever.  So glad to have once shared the stage with him.

Saw this musical when I was 12, still adore everything about it. Reminds me also of my late Dad who loved him and musicals too.

Who can I turn to
When nobody needs me?
My heart wants to know
And so I must go
Where destiny leads me

With no star to guide me
And no one beside me
I'll go on my way and, after the day
The darkness will hide me

And maybe tomorrow
I'll find what I'm after
I'll throw off my sorrow
Beg, steal, or borrow my share of laughter

With you I could learn to
With you what a new day
But who can I turn to
If you turn away?

With no star too guide me
And no one beside me
I'll go on my way and, after the day
The darkness will hide me

And maybe tomorrow
I'll find what I'm after
I'll throw off my sorrow
Beg, steal, or borrow my share of laughter

With you I could learn to
With you what a new day
But who can I turn to
If you turn away?

Tony Newley is the only man who can sing this song! Thank you for the post xxx

I always feel that one of Newley's strengths (apart from being a genius) was that he channelled the Jewish Cockney vaudevillian and sang in Cockney English, never mid-Atlantic.

Yes, a genius!! He wrote plays and all the music! And then starred in them. Who can do that? Is he living? Thanks for sharing.
