Modern-day: "Fandoms are so toxic. It couldn't always have been like this"
17th century nobility: "I'll end anyone who says Dante is mid"

It's like in the Spanish-speaking world, no one has read Don Quixote, but we consider it the best work done in history

Me and my friend recently did some deep research on this: the anecdote is about the Neapolitan noble, its current form was mentioned in Duels and Duelings Alphabetically Arranged with a Preliminary Historical Essay by Lorenzo Sabine from 1859 (an American prptestant preacher, no relation to Italy or Napoli whatosever), which was quite possibly based on one earlier mention of this story from 1820-30s from some religious moralist pahphlet released in the US. Sadly, the conclusion of our research, including the sources directly mentioning this occurance, as well as sources in Italian and Neapolitan, end there and do not corroborate such historical person ever existing. So it was probably all made up to teach us a lesson about morality and futility of fighting (as the 1800s original text of this anecdote suggests) but we all turned it into a meme and decided that the unknown Neapolitan noble is a chad. I love the Internet.

The funniest part is the only reason we know this is because the confessor violated his office by telling us the man's confession. He was so flabbergasted about it he had to sin just to tell someone.

Man just wanted to fuck shit up and found the flimsiest of excuses to do it. I could respect that.

This is how I unironically worshipped The Prince without reading it when I was a kid

Then I read it

I worship it even more

The confessor like, "But you must admit that Orlando Furioso is better than Inferno" and he's just like, "What are either of those?"

Now that's some next-level contrarianism

I have only played about 5 minutes of _Ocarina of Time_ and have no idea what the story is about beyond Ganon capturing Zelda at the start, but it's the best game of all time because it's in number 1 or 2 of the majority of "top 10" lists of the best games.
