ESO DEEP DIVE: The Crown Store 👑 Microtransactions And Earnable Rewards

The Elder Scrolls Online’s crown store has been a hot topic among the community for a long time. Players have been very unsatisfied with ESO’s crown store prices, loot crate practices, and aggressive monetization strategies, among other things.

This discussion reached a boiling point once crown crate gifting was disabled a few months ago, and it resurfaced once more after the ability to gift crown crate items was revoked on September 1st due to fraudulent behaviour.

I totally agree that more rewards could be added, and I would like to see "for the foreseeable future" an increase of endeavor awards. 😅

I think I've been too okay with the crown store since I could buy stuff with gold to realize that this microtransaction store is really truly hurting the actual game. Buying crown items through gold made it feel like it was still at least a "necessary evil" but now I realize that it's more than that to a lot of people. Hope you have a good day

I have never bought anything off the crown store for someone else or had anyone buy something for me and I have had this game for 8 years. I played on Xbox for a long time and have just recently switched to PC tho. When I heard this was a contoversy I was shocked, since there are so many things I enjoy doing in ESO.

If you're looking for somethint to occupy your time, and you can call me a masochist, but one of my favorite activities in ESO is stealing / pickpocketing in Vvardenfell to find motifs. I enjoy the hunt and it gives me something to work towards.

I think ESO really needs to take some pages from FF14. If you make good expansions and most of the rewards are earned through grinding, the money will come on its own because people will log in and more likely pay for subscriptions. Increasing prices and trying to gouge players through crates is most certainly NOT the route to go.

I don't think you're naive. I'm right there with you, Arttea. I don't think this will be permanent. I think it's an emergency measure to prevent total shutdown due to international laws being broken - something that regular ole vanilla crown buying didn't cause. I hope they get it sorted and we get gifting back, even if it never comes back for crates.

Thanks for covering this, it’s a bit depressing that teso creators are collectively focusing their creative efforts but we all saw it coming years ago. Teso creators seem like a wholesome group of people, you guys deserve all the youtube monies etc.

About crown crates- I am an ADHD person with disposable income. It is incredibly hard for me too abstain from purchasing crown crates with my own dollars, due to lack of impulse control. I would have to have someone monitor my bank accounts and yell at me just to make sure I don’t buy them, and that’s not accessible for everyone with a mental disorder/disability. So I try to avoid logging in most days… There’s no way the devs are in charge of monetization, that’s most likely managed by someone else entirely. Yay capitalism, gotta love it bc it allows us to make all the money but it encourages predatory practices. <3

I know I'm in the minority, but I have only ever purchased DLCs, or in-game services (like a Race Change) from the Crowm Store. There are so many outfits, homes, furniture plans, motifs, etc. In the game. I love just checking traders and seeing what I can find. I dont understand why people love the Crown Store...

What I would love to see is more in-game rewards for achievements, and Necrom was an okay step in that direction. More antiquities, outfits, furniture etc.

100% agree with Arttea! I'm taking a few weeks break from logging in to show my dislike of the recent store changes. I encourage anyone else who feels the same to do as I'm doing. Lots of lower login numbers are bad for people in charge, imo.

I have been part of the TTS for 2 weeks now (thanks for letting me in), and I can confident say that the number of players in ESO after they disable the gift system are way low than before, you can notice on queues for BG's or DG's, sales, even in cyrodiil, let's pray they fix the problem asap, so we can have our game full again.

With the crown store disabling gifting… yeah it made me realize just how much the store encourages us to play. The fact that we can earn gold to potentially buy new DLC, a house or cool mounts/cosmetics was awesome.

Now it’s like what do we do with all the gold we have? Sure we can afford making our gear gold, buy motifs and such. But getting crown exclusive stuff is just cool! Now we’re truly behind pay walls this time

Fix the damn Seals of Endeavor system!!! Like give Seals rewards for completing certain HARD achievements trials etc... Even if its a once off for getting said achievement. Use some of the old crown store content as actual in game rewards for certain events or overland content! Stop these damn Crown Crates!!!

Considering that they havent fixed a lot of bs in update 35 with high isle to this day, the crown crate gifting being gone for close to 2/3 of a year (despite being ''temporary''), people in charge of zenimax and eso doing same mistakes over and over again and not learning or even getting penalized, ignoring and sometimes straight up insulting the playerbase and top it all off the fact that zenimax is subsidiary of microsoft which is notourious for letting games die because there was not enough profit that rivals EA. I say our chances of them doing anything about this last straw are null, and personally If have to chose between paying irl money on microtransactions or a new game I would chose new game 10/10 times.

It is a real snob strategy to make "donate-only" currency in the game, which you can get only for real money as all of wide list of DLC's (which are almost essential, when you are going to high end PvE or just wanna have a non-boring and "non-limited-demo-version" content)
I think, providing a free crown coins, which are going to earn passively with in-game activities and get limited ammout of those in a day/week/month will decide a crown store gifting/trading problem once and forever.
For example: there's a limit of 500 crowns per month. For completing a normal trial you will get 25 of this in the daily coffer or as a reward of the trial quest once a day. For completing a veteran trial - 50 crowns. For completing a hard-mode trial - 75 or 100 crowns
So you will have to take hard-mode trials 5 times in a month to fill your crown cap and It seems challenging and also possible to get in some craglorn.
And similar thing could be in the alliance war. Getting to top 50/100 of your alliance rating grants you 500/250 Crowns

While I really appreciate Necrom’s larger selection of earnable rewards, it came at the cost of a Q3 dungeon DLC & a new Q4 zone. Additionally, Q3’s quality of life patch has been a little buggy for me (e.g. the companion suppression feature); it’s not living up to expectations. Now, ZOS is chasing down a crown store glitch without compensating players for the MASSIVE inconvenience (How many years will I have to wait to get the crown store items I missed? Will I even be playing ESO by the time they come back?). At the beginning of this year, I was cautiously optimistic; now, I’m just disappointed. To me, the crown store is ESO’s sandy foundation, upon which it cannot build any higher. I want to play this game and love it, but now I’m wondering if all my time on this game is worth it. Feels bad.

The bigger problem is having to buy ANY crown store items with real money. Players wouldn’t be leaving if this whole real money system wasn’t in place in the first place. This has gotten too complicated. There is already a pretty expensive membership that should include crown store items, and more players would subscribe if crown store items are included, making ZOS more money.
