Whole video is in these lines:

eSATA, mSATA and M.2 SATA. What are these things? Well all these have a common term that is SATA and if you want to know them then this video is for you. Hello my name is Nayan Jyoti and I welcome you to my channel How bnj. Like the video, subscribe my channel and hit that bell. Let's go.

In short SATA is an interface developed in the year 2003 to connect the storage drives mainly hard drive and DVD drive to a computer internally. As the time passes, different revisions with different bandwidth and different form factors have also been developed. I already made some videos on revisions, bandwidth and on other aspects of SATA which you can check in my channel profile. But today we will learn only about these three eSATA, mSATA and M.2 SATA. Let's first talk about eSATA.

Initially, SATA was designed as an internal interface for the storage drives to overcome the limitations of PATA. After sometime, designers developed a new type of connector using the same SATA protocol for the external drives also to overcome the limitations of USB and FireWire IEEE 1394 interface of that time and named it as eSATA meant external SATA. For a secure eSATA connection both the computer and the external drive must have eSATA port and they must be connected through an eSATA cable. Unlike SATA, eSATA had a different physical port or connector and had hot plugable feature which was not with the SATA devices of that time. eSATA also supports a 2 metre overall cable length as compared to 1 metre SATA cable. For these reasons we cannot connect them interchangeably. Now one question may come to your mind that why don't we see any eSATA port or cable in our computer? Well, this is mainly because of USB. eSATA was developed because the USB and FireWire of that time didn't support the speed of the hard drive that were designed for external use. But as the newer version of USB such as USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 released, the speed of eSATA became slower as compared to USB as well as USB was more common and used for a wider range of devices such as mouse, keyboard, pendrive, printer, scanner etc. As a result, eSATA become obsolete.

Now let's talk about mSATA and M.2 SATA. Like eSATA, mSATA is also a connector designed in 2011 using the same SATA protocol for smaller type of SSDs. So these types of SSDs are called mSATA SSDs meaning mini SATA SSDs. mSATA SSDs are smaller in size, consume less power, and have less storage capacity as compared to standard 2.5 inch SATA SSDs and are designed to use in smaller, portable and power constrained devices such as tablets, laptops, GPS devices, electronic smartboards etc. Like an 2.5 inch standard SATA SSD, they also support all the revisions of SATA ranging from 1.5 Gbps to 6 Gbps bandwidth. Although mSATA SSDs are good from many sides but they are increasingly being replaced by M.2 SSDs. So mSATA SSDs are not found in the newer devices.

The m.2 form factor was emerged in the year 2013 aproximately 2 years after mSATA form factor to supersede mSATA format.

Now let's talk about M.2 SATA SSD. The M.2 SATA SSD is a type of M.2 form factor. The M.2 SSDs are of two types one is M.2 SATA SSD and another is M.2 NVME SSD. For complying with the SATA specifications, M.2 SATA SSDs speed cannot go beyond 600 MBps. But the M.2 NVME SSDs are incredibly faster than all the SSDs.
