A simple way to explain what a market maker is: someone wants to buy stock A, someone wants to sell stock A, the market maker is the in-between the buyer and the seller.

Thanks for sharing the info! I was wondering whether it helps to work at a fintech start-up before taking a stab at SWE at these high-volume finance shops?

It seems like some of the support software are similar but the main difference is the high QPS of hedge funds experience that I don't have at this role. I wonder if it's better to get a job that mimics this high volume at some pub-sub companies like notifications, etc that rly maximizes speed

Thanks for sharing this. I'm currently learning C++ and preparing for SWE roles at hedge funds. You recommended prepping via LeetCode for algorithmic side of things. I currently LeetCode using Python and am quite comfortable at that. Would you recommend switching to C++ since these companies heavily use them? Do they allow you to choose the programming language of choice for coding interviews?
