I didn’t go to uni also. I was a self taught programmer and after 10 years developing, I realised I hated developing apps for companies. I switched to QA automation and it was the best decision I made. Same money, less hours.

They really could be trying to make that process full with a job they give you to test, but it's described as writing assert functions. So we fine if your friend has a better luck with a job nobody knows about as much as there are results for a query php or C#.

My question is why do I need to learn coding? I am supposed to be testing the application from different aspects, so why the coding?
Also, what languages I need to learn (if I have to), and to what level? does it depend on the application I am testing? e.g. if I am testing an application that is written in Python, then I need to know Python, if it is Java, then I need to know Java, correct?
