Silica Gel Indicator Beads to keep your Filament Dry!

This is my favorite way to help keep filament dry. These little mesh linen bags can store a large amount and nestle in between spools. The indicating silica beads help to know when they’ve absorbed moisture and they can be refreshed back to blue/dry with just a minute in the microwave. Note that the Blue/Pink indicating beads have a non-food safe chemical in them. There is an orange/green option and clear silica beads work just as well.

The bags look like a good solution, I have printed a holder that fits inside the center of a spool of filament.
I purchased a food saver and bags to reseal the filament with the desiccant inside - then put in plastic tubs that are air tight.

This is also beneficial for all filaments. Even PLA can get brittle over time if it absorbs moisture

I switched from silica to activated alumina in little metal containers for spices fit almost perfect. Or Slice Engineering makes really good ones!

Blue Pink contains a chemical that is not safe around food you say. These products instruct the use of a oven to recharge. My brain is going "I use the oven for food..." My question is can I use my oven to recharge this product and safely use that same oven later for food? Thank you for the video.

Thank-you so much. Such a good idea. Please could I ask, will the beads not leak moisture into the container if it gets a bit too long? We have terrible humidity during the rainy seasons.

@FilamentStories so you microwave the beads a minute?
I've heard you can microwave them but I've never heard how long

I just have a filament drier. I pop my spool in a few days before I need to print and let the hot dry air do it's thing.

How does the plastic get wet, like how does it attract and hold moisture

At what microwave setting do you use to reactivate silica gel? Do you use defrost? Or low? Also, how do you cool it down without it absorbing moisture?
