A little bit of octave fuzz jam fun as we try out small band shows

Life too short for long YouTube videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below.

Welcome to the show! A little departure for us… Regular viewers will know that we’re experimenting with demonstrating guitar sounds in a small band context. This video is a couple of jams from our preliminary tests. It’s not a complete video per se; moreover it's there just to see what you lovely people think and let us know if you want more of this stuff.
We appreciate that only a small percentage of guitar players actually play in bands -– we would dearly love to encourage more to do so – so we’ll take your lead!

Massive thanks to Dougie Mussard for being such a wonderful human and bashing the tubs for us.

How did we record this?
The drums are mic’d in the Glyn Johns method (using Neumann TLM102 as the overheads), plus an extra snare mic (Beyerdynamic M201) underneath. The bass is DI’d via an Ampeg SVT DI, the guitar cabs are mic’d as usual (Austrian Audio OC18), plus our stereo room mics (AKGC414XL). It’s spill city in the room in terms of the mics and we kinda love that.
Everything hits our UA Apollo interfaces for recording and I mixed it (Mick here) using Universal Audio Luna.

Erm, what happened to the Nobels? As all our regular viewers will know, it’s //always// a cable. And it was. So no Nobels. And it wasn’t turned on anyway. Doh.

Enjoy the video!

Well, you can’t demo stuff now without a full band anymore, chaps. This is TOO GOOD to not be a regular thing.

My goodness, the awesomeness that is Dougie cannot be overstated. He is such a great drummer, fantastic beats and fills, always plays musically and does exactly what the song needs. Great ear and technique. No wonder Dan loves Dougie so much! A true professional!

Just goes to show that playing in a band setting really requires a totally different tone. I love this type of demo. Not enough people do this. Your content is gold. A baseline for futur video formats.

Basically we can’t have enough of these. They might work for those that don’t like the length of the regular shows too so win, winnertty, win!

I think it would be fun if you could combine a jam with a pedal review as part of your basic format, or have them as two back to back episodes. The first episode in the series be the normal pedal review, the next one (could be a mini-episode like this one) shows you guys doing a jam with all the pedals you just reviewed.

Love the jam format one of the reasons I love the show is because your playing styles and phrasings are unique and it’s cool to see/hear you both let it flow rather than demonstrating the capability of a pedal

Europe now has a worthy pendant to the JHS Show jams; finally!

I love this, please do more. I really like the fact that you use a small number of pedals so that my tiny brain can understand the contribution made by each in context. Also a massive shout out to Doug who compliments what everyone else is doing to perfection....awesome professionalism. Thanks.

Freaking phenomenal! And a prime example of why everyone needs to play in a band setting. You guys killed it. Cheers from Texas

Love the Jam format - I would totally be into watching more of these. Sound is ok to my ears with high quality headphones. I would actually like the see the drum mic levels stay where they are - that creates the space we need to listen guitar effects a bit more ‘clinically’ . Mick; you were in top form again! Loved the playing. Cheers!

Loved this jam format, really interesting to see each pedal’s contribution and Dan’s solo was just immense! Didn’t want it to stop

As this is a whole new thing i don't think anyone expects it to be at the same level of production and polish as the regular show right away. It's already good to see you're giving it a shot and i'm happy to go along and see where it goes!

Instant win for music over endless tone seeking. This is what its all about, it gives context to the usual conversations about sitting in a band mix.

Excellent stuff, keep this regular some how.

Thank you for this. It's really great seeing two totally different approaches the the same gear in a jam setting. I think I'm gonna use my octave fuzz a little more at rehearsal today

Jam-tastic, loved this, just three people jamming well on great gear, more of this would be excellent :)

Thoroughly enjoyed that! Reminder of what it’s all about - the thrill of making music and letting yourself go with out any self doubt or judgements. Well done all of you.

I don't know if either of you can feel it, from within, but having been watching you guys play on this show since near its inception, I just wanna say: not only is it great content, but you've both evolved as guitarists in interesting ways and in ways profoundly affirmative of my own musical journey. Both the struggles and the joys. Thanks for doing what you do! Cheers, from Virginia.

Love it - sounds great in the headphones. That's a fantastic drummer who listens and understands dynamics. Makes me want to start jamming again. Bravo fellas.
