Best note: have enough seed in the bucket for when the mice try to jump. It does not let them get far. 😉

I did this 15 or 20 years ago with a wastebasket in my room. I cut the sleeve off an old sweater and taped it to the outside. I put a strip of waxed paper with peanut butter and millet on it in the bottom as well as a piece of paper I ran through the shredder for bedding. Oh and a pop cap of water.
Live caught and released several mice that way.

Think I'll try that one. Right now I use the five gallon bucket with the roller on the top and water in the bottom. It works, but I've never watched a mouse drowned in the bottom and I don't think it to be too pleasant of a way to go, considering I'm a catch-and-release kind of guy to start with

Without a mouse trap.. But.. The peanut butter is the bait, and the bucket is essentially the trap they cant get out of.. :D

I used to do this to catch wayward hamsters :D Just build some stairs by stacking books up to the edge of the bucket and pad the bottom and I always caught any hamsters that escaped. :)

Put 6" water in a bucket and put a layer of seeds on the water, worked wonders.
