If you ever have major issues like this, these are valid reasons to not pay rent to your landlord. HOWEVER, in order to win a case like this and possibly not get evicted, you should open up an account at your bank called an escrow account or just a separate account. Every month put your rent money in this account. Keep records of damages and issues that the landlord is responsible for addressing. Also keep records of any all communication you've had with your landlord about the issues.
This will show your willingness and ability to pay your rent to the court which can halt an eviction. Also it now puts the responsibility back on the landlord to make changes to the property. If you still end up getting put out, you will also still have money for your next move. Unfortunately, most people use situations like this to just not pay anything and don't have any money when they do have to move.

These aren’t just good reasons not to pay rent, they’re legal reasons not to pay rent.

In my state, Kansas, unless otherwise stated in the lease it’s up to the landlord to handle pest control once they’ve been notified by the tenant.

In addition, most leases specifically state you cannot be in trouble with the cops regularly, so by being the scene of a shooting and regularly getting busted for drug related activity (which all trap houses are) the landlord would’ve had zero legal standing for evicting her for not paying rent *had she served them a 14-30 notice as required by law.*

All these people are getting shafted by their landloards. Renters right exist for this reason. Withholding rent checks are allowed and being evicted for that. I pray this person gets a probono lawyer who get recoup some of the costs of being evicted and then gets that off their record. Horrible landlord

You need to pay your rent first, then take them to court. Make sure you notify them in writing of the problem. Never don’t pay rent. No landlord wants to rent to someone that has been evicted.
