The Second Wave of Big Data - Dai Clegg

Показать описание
This presentation is a brief summary of the technologies that originally emerged, largely driven by Google. Facebook,Yahoo and others, to create the Big Data label, and categorises them by the use cases they best address. What emerges is that the first generation of big data use cases were primarily about taking cost out of existing data warehouse applications or extending them to accommodate new data sources.
But the second wave, now beginning to emerge, addresses a whole family of use case that have not been well served by existing technologies. These use cases apply where decision making depends on the freshest data, for example monitoring IT infrastructure, controlling hi-tech manufacturing, managing smart grids, responding to player patterns in online gaming, measuring marketing effectiveness in web-click and social media trends. Batch -oriented architectures cannot respond to this, so NoSQL databases are becoming the new workhorse for these new opportunities
The Presenter:
Dai Clegg - VP Product Marketing
Dai has been working with databases since the 1980s. For most of that time with Oracle, in the trenches as a consultant, in the ivory tower as a methodologist, in a suit as a marketer, and in the skunk works as a product developer. He finally left Oracle and joined Netezza, mostly to rediscover the joy of a small company with great technology, focused on what customers really want. Then he landed on the Big Blue Planet when Netezza was acquired by IBM. But despite the opportunities at IBM, he still had the start-up bug, so joined Acunu to explore more of the world of big data - this time in real-time analytics.
