Story of an Icon: Seiko Tuna History

In this video I would like to talk about a true icon of the diving world, the Seiko Tuna: a unique design in this field. This is a watch which, in my opinion, is the only true competitor for the Omega Seamaster PloProf as the finest piece of horological marine engineering of the 1970s.

I'm enjoying this series of deep dives (get it?) into historically important watches. If you ever see a Tuna on the arm of a person out in the street, you can be certain that they are a watch enthusiast. Nobody outside of our community really knows about these watches and they certainly can't understand why someone would pay so much for a quartz dive watch. But we watch nerds can and do.

Very good video. Yeah, to me the Seiko professional dive watches have always been the ultimate statement in technology for real world divers, while the Submariner or Sea Dweller have been more of tuxedo jewelry "divers". :) The Seamasters being something in between the Seiko and Rolex.

I used to have the 1980 titanium quartz tuna. It had a case twice as thick as most watches, and the straps were ridiculously long for my 6-1/4" wrist. You had to have full scuba gear on for it to look natural sitting on your wrist.

Saturation divers live in a compression /decompression chamber for a period of up to 28 days..During this time they breath a gas mixture of 98% helium 2% Oxygen .. The average automatic diver watch, at some point needs to be synchronized due to minutes lost over a week or so.. Helium will always be present in dive watch cases.. The critical period is during decompression of the divers back to surface. This can take days and sometimes up to a week depending on how deep they where diving..During this time if the watch is not submerged. The helium escape valve must be opened to avoid crystal pop.. The preferred models have a automatic escape valve like the Rolex Deep Sea dweller.. I have known Omega Sea masters to fail in Saturation often.. Basically sometimes divers forget to open the release valve.. Helium incursion is unavoidable ...

Great video. I have no idea where you found so much information on this watch. It makes me want to go out and buy one of the vintage model. You do deserve more views and likes.
