Matthew 5:3-12

“Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4 Blessed are those who mourn,
for they will be comforted.
5 Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit the earth.
6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they will be filled.
7 Blessed are the merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.
8 Blessed are the pure in heart,
for they will see God.
9 Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they will be called children of God.
10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

11 “Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. 12 Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Dear man whom God loves. After world war Two, one of the U. S army guys who liberated Italy, was an atheist. He went to see Padre Pio. Mocking the Padre, The U. S. Soldier jeered, "Hey! Show me your wounds!" to be which Pio softly replied, Come to confession and show your wounds to me." The soldier went to the confessional. The soldier accepted, as his Savior, Jesus Christ of Nazareth. I thought you might like that story of Divine Wisdom. God bless you: respectfully and Gratefully yours Gregg Oreo Long Beach CA États Unis

Romans 12:18-20

18 If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. 19 Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay, ”[a] says the Lord. 20 On the contrary:

“If your enemy is hungry, feed him;
if he is thirsty, give him something to drink.
In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.”[b]

5 million confessions?

That’s like he heard 171 confessions every day for 80 years

Assuming a confession is 5-10 minutes (what google said), round it to 7.5 minutes each

That would be 21.3 hours of non stop confessions every day for 80 years.

70 full years in the confession booth,
More than the life expectancy in the Philippines.

Padre Pio's estimated number of confessions heard would've been around 300, 000. 5 million seems more than excessive to say the least

Editing this comment a few days later because I did some further research into sources for both estimates of confessions using chatgpt. I thought the low estimates were true at first but looking at both sources in detail I think I lean towards the higher estimates now or at least somewhere in the middle. I'm Catholic but also want to be objective and unbiased. So my initial response I would say is too hasty. Feel free to say what you think in light of the comparison below.

So I spent around 30 minutes with the help of chatgpt going through the sources for both the low estimate and high estimate of confessions heard by Padre pio and accessing their reliability. Here's what I ended up with.

To evaluate the different estimates of the number of confessions heard by Padre Pio, we should examine various sources that provide these figures and assess their reliability based on their origin, credibility, and the evidence they provide. Here's a comparison of the sources that suggest Padre Pio heard around 300, 000 confessions and those that estimate 5-7 million confessions during his lifetime.

Sources Suggesting Padre Pio Heard Around 300, 000 Confessions:

1. Catholic Biographies and Articles:

- Some biographies and Catholic publications provide lower estimates, such as 300, 000 confessions. These estimates are often more conservative and are based on approximate calculations of the average number of confessions he might have heard daily over his ministry without considering extended hours or supernatural events like bilocation.

- For example, certain biographical articles and books might take a straightforward approach, calculating his hours in the confessional and assuming a moderate number of confessions per hour.

- These sources generally aim to give a reasonable estimate based on Padre Pio's known schedule and workload and tend to focus more on the human and pastoral aspects of his ministry.

2. Testimonies from Fellow Friars or Local Church Records:

- Reports or testimonies from those who lived with Padre Pio, such as fellow Capuchin friars, may provide lower numbers based on their observations and the records they kept. These testimonies can reflect a sense of cautious understatement, emphasizing the difficulty of maintaining precise records over so many years.

- The local church in San Giovanni Rotondo might have kept records that offer a conservative estimate, reflecting an average day without including periods of unusual demand or extended hours.

Sources Suggesting Padre Pio Heard 5-7 Million Confessions:

1. Prominent Catholic Authors and Devotional Literature:
- Estimates of 5-7 million confessions come from many Catholic authors, devotional books, and some official Church statements that celebrate Padre Pio’s extraordinary dedication to the sacrament of reconciliation. For example, these sources may rely on anecdotal evidence and the testimonies of thousands of penitents who came from around the world to confess to him.

- Books like "Padre Pio: The True Story" by C. Bernard Ruffin or "Padre Pio: Man of Hope" by Renzo Allegri provides accounts that align with the higher estimates, based on the testimonies of those who observed him directly or who have collected stories from people who confessed to him.

2. Writings of His Spiritual Children and Followers:

- Many writings by Padre Pio’s spiritual children (people who viewed him as their spiritual father) and followers include higher estimates, often emphasizing the sheer number of people who came to him and the supernatural aspects of his ministry, such as bilocation or miraculous endurance. These accounts are filled with stories of people who waited for days or weeks to confess to him, reinforcing the idea of an extraordinarily high number of confessions.

- This perspective aligns with the tradition in Catholic devotion that highlights saints' extraordinary feats, especially those attributed to their sanctity and divine favor.

3. Statements from the Capuchin Order:

- The Capuchin Order, to which Padre Pio belonged, and his monastery have at times provided estimates on the higher end. They highlight his intense schedule, often hearing confessions for up to 15-18 hours per day. These estimates are more likely to consider periods of especially high demand and include times when Padre Pio was known to exhibit supernatural phenomena, like bilocation.

Comparative Analysis:

1. Nature of Evidence:
- The sources suggesting 300, 000 confessions tend to rely on more conservative, practical calculations based on human capabilities, likely dismissing or not emphasizing supernatural phenomena like bilocation. They are grounded in a more skeptical or restrained understanding of his ministry.

- The sources suggesting 5-7 million confessions often factor in supernatural elements, like bilocation and miraculous endurance, and emphasize the extraordinary nature of Padre Pio’s ministry. They draw from testimonies of thousands of people and are more common in devotional literature that aims to inspire faith in the miraculous.

2. Credibility and Trustworthiness:

- Conservative Sources (300, 000 Confessions): These sources might appear more credible to those who prefer a more grounded approach and caution against inflating numbers. However, they may not fully capture the unique, mystical aspects of Padre Pio’s ministry that many believe were real.

- Higher Estimates (5-7 Million Confessions): These sources are often seen as trustworthy within the context of Catholic devotion, especially for believers who accept the reality of supernatural phenomena like bilocation. The credibility of these sources rests heavily on faith in the testimonies of those who experienced Padre Pio’s ministry firsthand and trust in the spiritual insights of the Capuchin Order.

3. **Historical and Contextual Factors:**

- The **5-7 million estimate** is consistent with Padre Pio's reputation for extraordinary sanctity and miracles, aligning with the Catholic tradition of venerating saints whose lives were marked by exceptional acts of faith and dedication. This figure also makes sense if you consider the length of his ministry, his reported ability to hear confessions for up to 18 hours a day, and his possible ability to biolocate.

- The **300, 000 estimate** might be seen as a more measured, human-centric calculation, offering a middle-ground figure for those who are unsure of the supernatural elements.

Conclusion

The more conservative 300, 000 estimate may be seen as more cautious and empirically grounded, focusing strictly on a natural understanding of Padre Pio’s ministry.

The 5-7 million estimate is more rooted in the spiritual and supernatural tradition of the Church, drawing heavily on testimonies, devotional literature, and accounts of miracles attributed to Padre Pio. The choice between which estimate to trust may depend largely on one's perspective on the role of the supernatural in the lives of saints and the weight given to personal testimonies and Church traditions

Padre pio had many miracles. For example (hopefully it's true) he said to Karol Wojtyła "i see pope in you" and as it was Karol becomed first Polish pope - John Paul II. I hope it's real, as it would be epic. Maybe he indeed done miracles.
