I remember reading a book that followed the causes of WW1 and the war itself week by week. In it, they talked about how the Germans were doing calculations on how many miles of railroad the Russians were building per year, and they concluded that within x number of years, the Russian capability of mobilization would be above that of Germany, therefore Germany needed to start a war while they still had the greater infrastructural capability. It's really fucking cynical, but that's realpolitik for you, I suppose. Well, I say realpolitik, Otto von Bismarck probably would never have allowed WW1 to happen in the first place.
