I do believe the MC is also dead. One: the Geiger counter was "crazy" he says and with no protection, he's taking full dose.
Two: The head is the source, which he for some reason thought going straight to it and hold on to was a good idea.
Three: The baloon seems like a mobile elephant foot.

Far be it from me to correct things, but Chernobyl is the name of the nuclear plant, not the city. The city is Pripyat(sp?)

Interestingly reactor 1 and 2 were still running normally until the year 2000.
Also the Azur swimming pool which most know from CoD was open until 1996 and mostly used by workers of the powerplant, scientists and liquidators.
