NWT wildfires: Evacuees worry government may not cover costly evacuation expenses

Northwest Territories authorities say wildfires near communities like Hay River, Fort Smith, and Yellowknife are being kept at bay.

But thousands of Northwest Territories wildfire evacuees may not be allowed to return home for weeks and that means costs will only begin to accumulate.

Jeff Semple speaks with people worried they won't compensation from the government and how the territory's finance minister is responding to those concerns.

Coniferous trees, aka turpentine bombs, are a known fire hazard. Residents whose lives and livelihoods have been ruined and shattered have no one to blame except themselves for their predicament. Of course, it is not that simple a matter. Any councilor in favour of felling trees ready-to-ignite in order to create a firebreak that surrounds and protects a town is declared a denier and their career terminated. Instead, they rush to save a tree, resorting to politically correct action with hefty fines levied on anyone that disturbs a pine, even though preserving a dangerous presence ultimately proves fateful.

Mature trees should be cleared out when property is developed and replaced with fresh saplings. New buildings. New lives. Growing older together. Conifers should not be left in place and their presence within a town should be distant and sparse and not contiguous with wild forest, otherwise residents invite catastrophe upon themselves.

These unfortunate victims who were opposed to implementing measures that might have prevented this tragedy are naturally now looking towards taxpayers to relieve their hardship.

I'm so sorry folks lost their homes or had to evacuate... But insurance is what should pay your expenses. You chose to live where you lived, so we in the rest of Canada should not have to pay for your evacuation expenses.

Sue the government all of them class action lawsuits and include chemtrails and creating extreme fires in the lawsuits remember these fires are not 'normal'. Question all motives especially government
