Dialing in Putting Distance & Speed Control On The Practice Green

It's not about putts per round, its about 3 putts. And the best way to prevent 3 putting is to control speed and distance. If you get the distance right you will almost never 3 putt. In this video I demonstrate a simple easy way to benchmark putting distance for flat uphill and downhill putts. Try this before your next round and let me know what you think.

Try this before every round and see your three putts disappear,

Thank you, watched your video, benchmarked my distance for backstroke, uphill/downhill sidehill, only had 1 3 putt and shot an 83, 11 strokes better than my last round

I’m now playing to a 9 handicap, and I’ve never had a simple explanation like this in regards to setting a baseline each round. So damn helpful, can’t wait to try it. I think this will truly help me remove 2-3 strokes each round, no question about.

This video deserves more views. Great advice for simple calibration for people who visit different courses. Will require some practice to get good at hitting a 50% stronger or weaker putt....but.... that's purposeful practice. Thanks for the video.

This is very similar to what I do before a round. I check the green speed by hitting putts to various distances. I will putt with a stroke that goes from right foot to left foot and then pace that off. Then I'll putt from outside of right foot to outside of left foot and pace that off. Then I'll increase the backswing and through-swing by another 4" or so and pace that off. That'll give me 3 different distances of putting lengths where I'll have a good feel for how hard I need to hit the putt for a given distance. Works pretty well.

I use the right foot as a marker to get a bacic length. Then you can judge the distance well after that, upphill or downhill.

This is great. I am bouncing between country club greens and a couple public courses, and it has been taking me a half a round to adjust. I will try this today. Thanks!

Really like this channel. Ive been so sick of bad lag putting that what I do now is. 1) take my stroke to my back foot and pace that off. 2) take my stroke half way and pace that off 3) take my stroke back 3 inches. This has helped me a bit but adding uphill and downhill variations is always tricky.

I tried this today for the first time. It worked really well. Nearly all my first putts landed withing one foot of the hole.

This video just surfaced in my feed. I like this concept, and like it even more when the length of the backswing/followthrough is noted and controlled. One of the better players in the SMGA here said a 1” backswing would roll a putt 1’, which really helped me take pace off shorter putts. I had already gone to 4”/6”/back foot/ that plus 1’ etc but all those were sort of fuzzy by feel with some adjustments depending on the warmup at the practice green. Adding your baseline approach will give me a more quantitative foundation. Thanks!

I use your method and do a test prior to going out for my round. First I try to find a level area or close to level on the practice green. Then I stroke 3 ball with a stroke half way to my back foot, pace it off and record the number. Do the same with a stroke from my back foot big toe and pace it off and record the number. Then again from middle of my back foot and record the paces. One more time to the outside of my back foot and record the paces. Seems like a lot but takes about 5 to 10 minutes to do. I usually record the numbers on the top of my score card. Then when I play I look at my green location, pace it off, ask myself if it’s up or down hill, adjust my alignment for breaks on the green and adjust my stroke to slope and putt per my recorded pace numbers above. It has made a huge difference in my putting. My average putts per round have dropped from about 2.2 per hole/round to 1.9 per hole/round. I’m guessing for a weekend warrior that’s pretty good?!
