I was lucky enough to see the Grateful Dead 52 times before Jerry passed. I was just 20 when he died. Living in NJ gave me like 15-20 “local” shows a year, plus mini summer tours. Wish I was born earlier. Saw the Allmans probably 100 times. Peakin at the Beacon was only a short train ride away. Watching Derek Trucks grow up was awesome. He was better than most at 10. That where my love of jam ends. Can’t get into the electronic or bluegrass sub genres, but am seeing String Cheese, for the second time, in Phoenix in March.

I consider the cure to be a jam band. It just doesn’t have the style of the classic jam bands but if you listen to their music, it is definitely jam Goth.

The Grateful Dead is my all-time favorite band. Billy and the Kids is probably my favorite derivative/survivor band, although Dead and Co. are excellent too. On the bluegrass connection, Yonder Mountain String Band is a kickass jam band AND a kickass bluegrass band. Huge fan of Skynerd (their live shows rambled a lot) and the Allman Brothers too.

Some jam bands, like Spafford, really put the improvisation into most every song, Most that I have been listening to for a long time have as many ditties as they do multi-part progressive with improv sections. All of them seem to have their own sound once you delve enough into their library and shows, so the best approach is probably to avoid any pre-conceived notions and just listen, both albums and live material. Some of my favorites include moe. Umphrey's McGee, Dogs in a Pile, String Cheese Incident, Widespread Panic (which has some terrific studio albums.) Grateful Dead and Allman Brothers is kinda implied. Also had great fun with The Radiators around the late 80's and early nineties.

Jambands are the best!! That’s what really made me go down the rabbit hole of music! 🤘🎸 Allman bros are the king of jambands and I’m not sure they can ever be surpassed! 🤷‍♂️😂🤘🎸
