Problems, Patience and Persistence

Don't try to solve a problem right away, first be a problem for your opponent to solve.
If you are persistent and patiënt, problems tend to solve themselves. Especially if your opponent isn't as patiënt or persistent.

When I'm playing top, I don't try to pass someone's guard right away. First and foremost, I'm denying my opponent to play guard.

I can't pass the guard of my flexible opponent right away and often even moving just a little, allows for a hook or being a little bit out of balance. This is often the beginning of his retention or attack.

Stay persistent and patiënt, I let him carry my weight. I let him tire out. When he adjusts, I adjust. Slowly inching in, like water slipping through a crack in the dam.

Do you prefer a slow meticulous game or a game of speed and misdirection?

Discuss in the comments!

Thanks for the advice. Indeed, as a white belt (like my other white belt peers), we are very impatient. Eager to submit the opponent as quick as possible.

I’m see more every day how high level jiu-jitsu happens in the in between. I’m nowhere near high level but I see it at least. I think slow and methodical works because we are less likely to give up anything we already have until they give us something better. Thanks for the content.

There's a lot of truth in the comment you made about persistence and patience. For me personally (and maybe because I am getting older), I've been having much more success with slowing the pass down and forcing a half guard situation, body lock or 3qrt mount. With so many traps and inversions there's too many opportunities for your opponent to leglock you especially if they are super flexible. But I definitely "counter attack" a lot more and wait for limb extensions. With that being said, I try to go for the finish every single match. Great content and love your instructional on the mirroring principle on BJJ fanatics.
