Embark on a journey to the best places to visit in Al Ain, where UNESCO World Heritage Sites await.

What should I visit in Al Ain, you ask? There’s so much to see and do in the lush garden city of Al Ain, just an hour and a half from Abu Dhabi city. Marvel at the 4,000-year-old Al Ain Oasis, stroke camels at the Al Ain Camel Market, discover the historic Qasr Al Muwaiji fort, climb Jebel Hafit peak and camp under the stars at Jebel Hafit Desert Park, meet animals at Al Ain Zoo and learn about heritage at Al Ain Palace Museum. Come to Al Ain, you won’t be disappointed!

With its still-operational traditional falaj (ancient irrigation system) and meandering pathways shaded beneath a thick canopy of over 147,000 date palms and other fruit trees, Al Ain Oasis is the perfect place to bring family or friends to see what agriculture in this region has looked like for millennia. Covering 1,200 hectares, this lush oasis provides a unique insight into the region's inhabitants who began taming the desert 4,000 years ago. Located in the centre of Al Ain, this is the largest of Al Ain's oases. Farmers tend to thousands of date palms of 100 different varieties, as well as fodder crops and fruit trees, such as mango, orange, banana, fig and jujube (known locally as sidr). Individual plots and working farms are separated from each other by historic boundary walls. The water supplying the lush oasis comes from both wells and the ancient falaj system that taps distant underground or mountain aquifers and then delivers the water, sometimes over many kilometres, to farms via a system of ground-level and below-ground aqueducts. Al Ain Oasis has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2011.

The famous and family-friendly camel market in Al Ain is a wonderful, authentic cultural attraction. From young Arabian camels that might grow up to be racers to beautiful adult camels ideal for breeding, the market is a one-of-a-kind experience offering a closer look at the animal that enjoys a special place in Emirati heritage.

Families should head to Al Ain Zoo, home to over 4,000 animals, and enjoy up-close giraffe feeding, camel riding and the inviting Elezba petting zoo. Transparent enclosures are home to indigenous and exotic species including Arabian oryx, the big-horned Barbary sheep, rhinos, hippos, tigers, lions and more.

If you’re into historical heritage, consider this world heritage site. Located on the western edge of Al Ain Oasis, Al Ain Palace Museum is one of the best-reinstated forts in Abu Dhabi, and one of the best places to visit in Al Ain. It is an important historical site in the UAE and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. For more UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Al Ain, head to Jebel Hafit mountain, Abu Dhabi's largest peak. Here you will find more than 500 ancient tombs, known as the Jebel Hafit Tombs. These 5,000-year-old tombs are made of local, unworked or roughly cut stones and mark the beginning of the Bronze Age in the UAE. This is one of the best things to do in Abu Dhabi, and one of the best things to do in Al Ain. You’ll be able to see the incredible Jebel Hafit Tombs on a guided hike through the area, organised by the Jebel Hafit Desert Park.

Occupying a nine-kilometre stretch at the base of the craggy Jebel Hafit mountain, visitors can also explore the family-friendly park’s majestic natural surroundings on a mountain bike, horse or camel and discover fascinating archaeological and historical remains that tell enchanting stories of this unique area’s ancient habitation. In 2011, UNESCO recognised the Jebel Hafit Desert Park area as being a vital component of the World Heritage Site of Al Ain, the UAE’s first World Heritage Site.

In the United Arab Emirates you’re guaranteed to see many heritage attractions, when you visit Dubai and when you visit Abu Dhabi. If you’re planning a Dubai vacation, take in the Dubai tourist attractions and then head to Abu Dhabi, only an hour from Dubai by car, for more desert adventure tours.
