Wolverine’s Timeline Explained

Wolverine from the future changed his past dramatically.

The new timeline keeps the first act of Wolverine Origins, the mutation happening in the year 1845. Wolverine fighting the wars with his brother Sabertooth. Getting kidnapped by the Japanese and even surviving a nuke.

Meeting Stryker after Vietnam, going on missions, getting adamantium and losing most of his memory never happened.

Instead at some point after 1973, Wolverine is surgically enhanced and unlike Wolverine Origins, Weapon X Succeeds in trapping him and was attempting to mind control him.

Mystique is killed so the timeline is further altered by her absence.

In Logan, the Statue of Liberty battle is referenced so we know X-Men 1 happened in some capacity. Mystique was crucial to X-Men 2 but we can assume the X-Men stopped Stryker’s plot in some capacity. And in a bonus scene in Logan, Xavier exclaims how Wolverine killed Jean meaning she must have come back after Dark Phoenix and the events of Last Stand might have happened in some way.

In 2023, future Wolverine wakes up in his body realizing he saved the future. Only until a few years later when Xavier accidentally takes the lives of all the X-Men. And we all know how Logan ended.

I made A LOT of claims so this pinned post is meant to provide the proof.

1) 'Logan' director James Mangold CONFIRMED Logan is a SEQUEL to the happy ending in 'X-Men: Days of Future Past.'

"We are in the future, we have passed the point of the epilogue of Days Of Future Past."

2) Since we see Jean Grey at the happy ending of Days of Future Past in 2023, it must mean Jean Grey's return as the Phoenix happened between 2023-2029. Perhaps in the way the events of 'The Last Stand' unfolded.

It’s funny how the Logan that died is a variant and wasn’t supposed to die. Bet that was fun with the TVA

This wolverine is very confusing. The whole timeline reset is so complicated. Thanks for trying to explain it!

It's sad how Wolverine's future always seems doomed. It's either the events leading to Days of Future Past and when he changed that it led to Logan

Marvel Fans: “So which is Canon and which is Non Canon”?

Fox: “Yes”

Mystique died a hero in Dark Phoenixx so her involvement in the original X-Men movies never happened in the new timeline.

Dont forget Charles has dementia, he could very easily just be remembering Wolverines memories as if they still happened. He knew the Logan he met in the 90s would eventually replace the one he had known, all those memories from the original timeline would still be in Wolverines head, plus he read his mind back in the 90s as well when Logan wanted to prove he wasnt lying. So basically high chance both events never happened, at least not the same way. He literally thinks it was Wolverine that killed all the X-men and not himself.

Timeline hasn't made sense since Days of Future Past and Dark Phoenix

Logan used to be on a totally different timeline (Earth-17315), but this changed, and then the director canonized it taking place after Logan wakes up in 2023, which makes absolutely no sense

Deadpool and Wolverine only made things worse with the timeline. Deadpool 1 and 2 never originally took place on the Earth-10005 timeline. They took place in the days of future past timeline (Earth-TRN414), but this has now been retconned

Now, here's what I don't understand about Dark Phoenix. X-Men: Apocalypse takes place in 1983 on Earth-TRN414 Revised Timeline, and we see that Jean already has the Phoenix Force near the end of the movie, right? So how is it that in Dark Phoenix, she apparently gets the Phoenix Force in 1992 now? Does Dark Phoenix take place in its own separate universe? Also, at the end of that movie, we see Jean has either died or she has fully bonded with the Phoenix Force, so how could the events of Last Stand repeat themselves in the Revised Timeline if Jean died in 1992 and is apparently now alive at the end of Days of Future Past in 2023? Well the answer is that it can't. I think it doesn't make sense because Dark Phoenix wasn't directed by Bryan Singer because at least he actually made things make sense with the X-Men movies he directed

With more to add, how can Deadpool and Wolverine take place in 2024 when Logan takes place in 2029? Does this mean that Earth-10005's time moves faster than the MCU's? Is it the 2030's or something because when Deadpool dug up Logan, the man was all bones.

Also, as a side note, the MCU isn't 616. It literally can't be. Earth-616 is the designation number for the mainline comics. The MCU's designation number used to be in canon. This was confirmed in 2008 with the official Marvel timeline book that designated Iron Man taking place on Miguel even mentioned this in ATSV when he said, "Don't even get me started on Doctor Strange and that little nerd back on So with this, we know that the Spider-Verse Trilogy is canon to the MCU Multiverse. There is absolutely no way that Mysterio guessed the correct designation number on a whim. MCU is not Earth-616 or Earth-616B because 616B is the designation for Peter B. Parker's Universe, and there is no 616C-Z in canon.

Also either the mercenary named Wade Wilson post 2000 is different from the one on Stryker's team in the 70s (that doesn't become Deadpool/XI thanks to timeline changes) or he's the same guy who ages very well between his appearance in Origins and Deadpool decades later.

What’s crazy is that he went back to stop the sentinels but ended up being part of a timeline that includes apocalypse and the death of all his loved ones which he has to go through twice smh

Why are The X-Men always dying

I really hope they stay together for a long while in the MCU and we get an Endgame moment for them

Its like u didnt pay attention. He wakes up in 2023 at the mansion with all the xmen alive and well at the end of days of future past. Xavier then has stokes from the genetically enhanced corn and ends up killing everyone but logan, logan lets Xavier believe hes responsible for the deaths to save him from the anguish in his last days. Logan absolutely did not kill jean nor was she dark phoenix in xmen 3 repeated

Actually, Logan isn't canon in the X-Men timeline. It's an alternative universe, and Deadpool lives in that universe

Only X-Men first class and days of future past are canon to the new X-Men timeline, if you put X-Men apocalypse and dark phoenix into the mix it'll just make things more confusing.

What yall don’t realize is there are parts in history and the future that are inevitable things that need too and will happen no matter how many times you change the past like the X men dying is an inevitable future that will only be prolonged but not stopped The flash explains this better

It's actually really sad that he saved the future and mutants just for most of them to die and the X-gene to get targeted and killed in ~6 years

My favorite parts of seeing the liveaction wolverine was watching Logan fight in the war. Other fights are let downs compared to Logan in a war from history.
It just felt more immersive and more realistic to the character as a mutant in the world making the best of his abilities.
