Vader stopped Luke from getting killed. As evil as vader had become, he still loved Luke. He knew sideous had predicted Luke would try to take him out. Palpatine is way too strong in the force for Luke to handle.

I don’t know, the way the scene was written, it seems to me that Vader was struggling with himself right up until the moment he put the emperor on his back. I don’t think he decided to side with Luke until the very last minute.

Luke's destiny wasn't to destroy the emperor. It was to be the catalyst to turn his father back towards the light so he may destroy the emperor and bring balance to the force.

The novelization says that Vader blocked Luke's blade because he doesn't have enough training to kill someone and deal with the repurcussions later killing someone is not the Jedi way as Anakin learned years ago

I thought it was all part of trying to turn into the dark side. Basically like the emperor and Vader came up with this plan to draw out Luke's in her hatred and anger and it involved him trying to kill the emperor and then beating his father down and all this crap.

I don't think Vader *let* Luke have the upper hand. Luke's rage at that moment gave him the upper hand in an otherwise even matchup.

My biggest gripe with the sequels is, Kylo loved Vader, we know Anakin came back as a Force Ghost, so why didn't Anakin just pop Kylo a visit and be like, 'look mate, being on the dark side ain't worth it OK?' It's proven a Force Ghost can go/be anywhere in the galaxy. It would make more sense for Kylo to wanna be like Palpatine, but then again nothing in the sequels seemed to have been well thought out, which is a shame.
