Electric! I remember sitting behind the BP in the Philharmonie and being amazed at the seamless dialogue between the wind players. Perfection!!

In the German lyrics' references to God, this composition good has been a forerunner in Beethoven's mind to his immortal Ode to Joy.

Came here on Tim Keller's recommendation. This was his sermon illustration, paradigmatic of a stellar performance instantly awarded by thunderous applause.

There are quite a few versions that I like in this Choral Fantasie (eg Agerich/Ozawa, and others). This version is splendid but is a bit strong in tone and borders on sounding Wagnerian. Beethoven hails from the bucolic town of Bonn in southern Germany who cherished revolutionary proletariat ideas and not a royalty kingdom. This playing is tipping on sounding overbearingly strong, like that of a victorious conqueror than a crowning win for the common people.
