Dr Stone doesn't need a typical shounen protagonist because it is not a typical shounen story.

In fact, I'd rather categorize it as wholesome seinen. It deals on issues based on reality.
It doesn't rely on one guy's struggles but rather humanity in itself. That's why the achievements feel more special and impactful.

Meanwhile, every other shounen anime boils down to a fist fight with nothing much to show for it besides cool fight scenes.
