Awsome engine. I put one of them in a toyota hilux with the 4speed auto years ago. 30% better fuel economy than the 2.8 diesel i took out & considerably faster than the diesel. Drove it hard for 7yrs & put over on it never had any problems with it.

The cam gear design is as such for the following reasons.  Having taken one of these engines apart, I can comment.  The cam gear that connect the intake and exhaust cam to each other, is installed under tension/preload with each other to keep the lash between gears at ZERO.  This accomplishes two things:  much more precise cam timing, and reduction in cam gear noise.   After all this was installed in a luxury car.  Cam installation is very interesting, and is not a straight forward process!  You need the factory repair manual for this job.

Had a 92 sc400 with 1555000 km on it and it still ran when I had to get rid of her was a sad day that car never let me down

So many comments about how this is a bad design because one cam drives the other via a gear and because it is a belt driven timing design? These motors are known to REGULARLY go 300, 000 miles plus! What are you taking about "bad" design?

I see the fact that Toyota spent huge sums designing this engine and was rated one of The most reliable v8's, would like one to swap in a Toyota pickup. Have heard of the cam jumping gears though, rare occurance

"Thats one f***ed up design", Seriously, you "loved it" only until you discovered this feature? It actually helps to prevent torsional loading (whip) through the camshaft.

As a Soarer owner I can attest that my 1UZ is anything but quiet. Nice knowing it can do both

The latest Ford 1.0 litre engine develops 125 hp and could give more. In Europe 100 hp per litre is expected for a new engine - gasoline or diesel. The cam drive on the Toyota UZ is neat. Belts have lower friction and noise than chains. The latest belts will last the life of the engine.

I was replying to some of the other comments which I found interesting and making some comparisons between an engine design from 1989 and one from 2012. When you are a bit older I would be happy to help you with some basic math(s).
