Asylum seekers from Mexico arrive in record numbers at Montreal’s Trudeau airport

Canada has seen a steady influx of asylum seekers over the past few years, with an increasing number of claims coming from Mexican citizens since the Trudeau government scrapped a visa requirement for Mexican travelers in late 2016.

The unofficial "Roxham Road" border crossing south of Montreal was closed last winter to manage the flow.

But as Gloria Henriquez reports, Quebec processed more than 25,000 asylum claims at the airport in 2023 — more than double the amount in 2022.

Offering payments to foreigners to ignore our immigration laws is insane!

This is completely unsustainable. Where are they going to live? I’m all for people trying to make a better life for themselves, I really am, but arriving on a tourist visa which was lie should be grounds for immediate disqualification.

As a Mexican who was raised in Canada, many of them come here to make a quick buck and leave.

It was a matter of time before Biden’s open boarder policy affected Canada. Taxpayers cannot afford to pay for others who cannot support themselves. We have seniors, veterans and individuals living at poverty levels, using food banks to survive.

It’s ridiculous the amount of illegal immigrants and asylum seekers coming through Canadian boarders every day. A real government would address this problem 🙄

It's disheartening that refugees receive benefits and favorable treatment without actively working and contributing to Canada. What about the hardworking Canadian citizens, veterans, and seniors who have played a significant role in building this country? I'm frustrated that our hard-earned money is being directed to these individuals and countries rather than prioritizing our own needs.

Do I have to be a legal slave for them? My life also is going tougher here, too in Canada. We need to lock down the border lines.

Had more than enough of this....where are they going to find apartments to rent? and with what money? Plus our hospitals are already full, can't find a doctor and yet we keep bringing more and more of them in?

This is ridiculous, he is not a refugee and certainly not fleeing war. He is here to pander and take advantage of the system.

"With all respect, could you explain why Mexicans seek asylum? Isn't their country safe, and isn't economic hardship a non-essential factor for seeking asylum? It's suggested they return and follow legal channels."

If they're capable of being an immigrant, they shouldn't be able to claim as refugees. That's such an abusive tactic and not fair for those who really deserved to be refugees that have been through hell.

Canada's reputation as a super generous welfare state is drawing unprecedented numbers of economic refugees and migrants who should be sent home. The massive nuumbers are creating misery and unaffordable costs for existing citizens.

Ask the NY police how they feel about immigrants right now.
