Lord Mayor Robert Doyle will join a panel of dedicated Victorian public sector workers for a special Melbourne Conversations event to celebrate United Nations Public Service Day.

“Most of us would experience some form of interaction with a member of the public service at least daily, but a lot of us don’t fully understand what it is they do and why,” the Lord Mayor said.

“This free Melbourne Conversations event will tell the stories of teachers, nurses, emergency workers, rangers and scientists; all of whom make a contribution to our great city and state.”

Panellists include:

Lord Mayor Robert Doyle: A Member of the Victorian Parliament for 14 years with experience in regulatory, legislative, legal and public policy.

Danielle Thomas: Park Ranger Coordinator at the City of Melbourne.

Tara Piazza: Program Director for Public Transport Victoria Marketing and Product Development

Daniel Hadley – Acting Nurse Unit Manager, Intensive Care Unit, Royal Melbourne Hospital

Terry Moran AC: Former Secretary of the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, and current National President of the Institute of Public Administration Australia

Barrie Cassidy: Australian political journalist, radio and television host, presenter and commentator.

The panellists will reflect on how and why their work makes a difference, including what motivates them, what challenges them, and whether they would describe their work as ‘a calling.’

As a former senior public servant and the president of the public sector’s professional association, Terry Moran will provide an overview of what a life dedicated to the public service means, and leading political journalist, Barrie Cassidy, will discuss the role of the public sector from a public interest perspective.

When: Tuesday 23 June 2015
