There are essentially six players that could be replaced from Southgate's shockingly imbalanced side but if you're only trying to improve the lefthand side and get one player who can link the play between the lines. So, Gomez, Mainoo, Gordon and Palmer in. If you are keeping the replacements to a bare minimum. But if it was up to me, I'd give Trippier, Rice, Bellingham Saka and Harry Kane a much needed rest. Other than Gomez in at left back, the defence remains the same, I'd bring in Foden to play with Wharton and Mainoo, replace the wide men with Gordon and Palmer and add Watkins. Suddenly you find you have the more pace, trickery, stronger pressing and an ability to keep the ball.

The problem is not the players, its their position on the field.
The back 4 need to be on the half way line or a little higher
Press the opposition into their half and make it hard for them.
We have lots of pace at the back so balls over the top arent an issue.
Drop off 10-15 yards when we lose the ball by all means but unless the opposition force us back late in the game when theyre behind theres no reason at all to be as deep for such long periods in games as we have been.

He has to start with how he finished last time as that was the best performance so far... Mainoo, Palmer, Gordon...if not then he can switch to his original conservative lineup.
