- Game Description -
Gloomhaven is a game of Euro-inspired tactical combat in a persistent world of shifting motives. Players will take on the role of a wandering adventurer with their own special set of skills and their own reasons for traveling to this dark corner of the world. Players must work together out of necessity to clear out menacing dungeons and forgotten ruins. In the process, they will enhance their abilities with experience and loot, discover new locations to explore and plunder, and expand an ever-branching story fueled by the decisions they make.

This is a game with a persistent and changing world that is ideally played over many game sessions. After a scenario, players will make decisions on what to do, which will determine how the story continues, kind of like a “Choose Your Own Adventure” book. Playing through a scenario is a cooperative affair where players will fight against automated monsters using an innovative card system to determine the order of play and what a player does on their turn.

Each turn, a player chooses two cards to play out of their hand. The number on the top card determines their initiative for the round. Each card also has a top and bottom power, and when it is a player’s turn in the initiative order, they determine whether to use the top power of one card and the bottom power of the other, or vice-versa. Players must be careful, though, because over time they will permanently lose cards from their hands. If they take too long to clear a dungeon, they may end up exhausted and be forced to retreat.

Awesome video. My group just finished Gloomhave a couple of months back; it took between 150 and 200 hours and was a blast. The only two thing I would add are that you are going to get rules wrong and that's okay. Plus, you can't play every scenario. The game is designed so some stuff gets shut off to you by the choices you make and you won't get to play everything. Even then, by the end we finished the campaign and the expansion and had a handful of stuff left but decided we'd done everything and stepped away. It's now sitting on a shelf of honor with my games and I'm trying to figure out what to do with it. I want to do something special and I haven't decided what. Though I am getting the RPG so I'll probably be pulling the terrain and enemy standes at some point.

It costs $40 for two ppl to go to a movie. $100 for a nice dinner. I don't mind spending a fraction of that money on an amazing game. Even blinging it out... you say $900? People spend that on a set of golf clubs... or booze. Or Starbucks coffee. Make your own coffee, don't go to bars. It's not expensive when you compare games to other stuff. It's all just budget and choices.

The main issue with digital gloom haven, which I have been playing with my more board game lacking friends, is that if you make a mistake you have to restart the whole round for everyone. While in the board game you can simply move back your turn. Ive had it were in the vid game all my friends go, then I go, I move, and then I realize I am one square off from a ranged attack. You can't simply move that extra space forward because you already confirmed your move. Then my friends don't want to restart the round because its annoying, so I just accepted my turn doing nothing, which results in us loosing the mission.

My lifestyle games are -- Frosthaven, ISS Vanguard, Tainted Grail Kings of Ruin, Ultimate Tanares Adventures and Gloomhaven II when it arrives. My group has played thru Gloomhaven and we are a little over halfway thru Oathsworn.

Thank you for this eyeopener :D ... I can see that this can be the perfect binding agent for a dedicated game group and possibly friendship. It definitely was for me. I even got my friends into English language games because of it. ^^ Crimson Scales is a fantastic expansion and I hope Rove will be a great success.

After playing 200+ Scenarios of various Gloomhaven content I agree that good organization and cooperation while setting it up is crucial. Going by plays it has become the cheapest game I own. My copy was only 80$ as 1st Ed. standee version. To make it transportable I used smaller expansion boxes of other games that I compacted. For the tiles we used a 3$ document organizer and a bits box from the local hardware store for tokens (used more readable D10 for monster damage). . Monsters are ordered alphabetically for easy access.
The dash boards are way over the top as the game can have such a small footprint (we play on a living room table 70x100cm (~2.1x3.1 ft) that can expand to 140cm (~4.3ft) by pull-out flaps.
It would have killed the game if only one and the same person had to always set it up ^^. Everybody in our game group has their special part of the set-up and book keeping which makes the game very accessible.
Admittedly I am ready to move on from the system but we enjoyed it tremendously :D So many other games wait as well ^^

Have played the game on Steam during the beta phase and like what they have done with the animation and 3d environment. However I have not the best eye sight so choosing cards on screen has turned out not fun for me. Still happy that this possibility exists as alternative to the chunky board game.

I have 150 plays of Gloomhaven, 50+ plays of Jaws, 30+ of Crimson and 30 of Frosthaven curently going through it with a game group. Then my wife and I are going through Oathsworn and I am going through Tainted Grail and Chronicles of Drunagor solo. I tired to add Midarra but only have been able to play 3 scenerios.

I played Jaws with my group and in my opinion I don't think they thought their rules through that well... we had scenarios where if we didn't do house ruling, it would be near impossible to beat

amazing ending. I think pretty much all of these apply to frosthaven too. After finishing gloomhaven and waiting Frosthaven, I bought a 3d printer and printed + painted all the terrain + all the bosses and some summons before starting our campaing. Now I have a 3D printer I dont use anymore :D

Gloomhaven is a game I want to love, but it seems to hate me. It goes out of it's way to ruin any tactic or plan I put together. Use my big attack, miss. Plan to kick an enemy into a blocking trap, now I draw the crit so it kills the enemy first. First round against cultists, oh look they summon more skeletons. It's a series of disasters I cannot seem to beat.

I am glad others can enjoy it, but not even KDM does me as dirty as this game.

I am interested to see how these videos for popular older games do for you. I have experimented a bit here is varying degrees of success. I assume this stuff will be evergreen and grow over time though. re:gloomhaven, I think I might just be an app guy, JOTL might be the only Gloomhaven box to enter into my collection.
