Russia faces global sanctions over its war in Ukraine. But how do they work?

Ben Rhodes is joined by US Deputy Treasury Secretary Wally Adeyemo to answer the question: “What are economic sanctions and how do they work?” Sec. Adeyemo makes the case for this non-violent diplomatic tool with examples of what’s worked — and what’s been less successful — regarding US and multinational sanctions imposed on Russia in response their war in Ukraine.

Crooked Media believes that we need a better conversation about politics, culture, and the world around us—one that doesn’t just focus on what’s broken, but what we can do to fix it. We are a media network that showcases stories, voices, and opportunities for activism that inform, entertain, and inspire action, because it’s up to all of us to do our part to build a better world.

That’s it. End of mission.

As the last of the teen generation under Apartheid/Segregation in South Africa, let me be clear, sanctions are 100% a necessity. They do work, it is the ONLY way you make those inside the country feel the pinch of a movement or a war they are the aggressor in and how to impact their conscience and pockets. South Africa, like Russia, at the time were also a fascist country, which means ALL media was state controlled. We only found out what was really going on in our own country through the underground or not at all. Sanctions force people to think as to why this is being applied and forces the change from within.

I love how succinctly you guys broke this down for us, I didn't really get how sanctions worked but now I've got a clearer picture.
And as a side note, this dude's voice is so calming that he needs to start his own podcast or come on the crooked team

8:03 Excuse me, that photo is from Ukraine, not from Russia (billboard is in Ukrainian language)
Second is even though I love this channel, I heavily dislike how you guys show the people of Russia. They're not all victims of Putin's regime. They're mostly actually supporters of it. Many of them are in favor of Putin being and power, and moreover, other huge chunk absolutely indifferent about it in a bad way, like when one doesn't save a poor victim of an attacker on the streat (they don't want to participate politically in order to remove current fascist government, but not because they fear it, but because they really don't care about what effect current Russia's government has on them and on other countries). Not all of Russians are like that, but the vast majority is, and it's sad that you don't have any expert who knows a lot about Russia and can tell it.

Do not add music in the background. It makes harder to understand the dialogue

Not directly Scott Miller, U.S. Ambassador to Switzerland, but someone else vindicated the "Secretary of State Helene Budliger Artieda (*1965) who is serving as Director of the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs SECO since August 1, 2022" as a war criminal before the ICC (International Criminal Court in The Hague, Netherlands), due to a lack of assistance and collusive collaboration with organized criminal gangs, particularly in Moscow and Saint Petersburg (examples: Mr. Erler, Mr. Perler, Mr. Lauber).

Recently OPEC decided to cut production of oil in order to increase prices, it was a missed opportunity to ask Wally how this will affect Russian oil and if it will lead to an increase in demand to its price cap.

Thanks for you the insights. Needless to say it is well planned multidimensional offenses economically. However, it's worth noting that we need the global south on the same boat and taking action, not only moral support. Also we have to put our good faith no European perseverance and endurance as the war drags on and the renewable energy still is far from reach. The high inflation and immigration crisis have elevated huge pressure both to regular people and governments.

interesting, although like most often with Amerika, not the whole truth, We in Europe are once again more dependent on US now for energy. I do not necesarily say this is a bad thing In Europe though we pay havily for all superhigh energy costs. All I hear from americans in no matter what context is how expensive energy costs are, at the same time American people in general do not think about making other choices or consuming less energy ... I find that most concerning.
