APFSDS Vs NERA #Non Energetic Reactive Armor

preview_player
Показать описание
This video presents the APFSDS penetration through NERA (non explosive reactive armor or Non energetic explosive reactive armor) plates. The NERA plates consist combination of RHA+Rubber+RHA. The NERA used in analysis are equivalent to T72-B turret Armor plates. The APFSDS used in analysis is equivalent to M829.
This video concludes that the APFSDS is failed to penetrate all the NERA plates and losses its KE before reaching end plates.

It seems that a rather large chunk of penetrator energy is lost on deforming the individual plates.

So, how does it compare with a solid block of steel of the same mass?

How long/deep is the special armor array ? Did you use the RHA explicit material for the RHA ? What kind of BHN value does the RHA have ?

So with enough seperate plates, they actually have an effect against sabot shells. I always thought they could basically go right through anything in their way.

Is this armour useless after all this?
Or could it withstand another with diminishing stopping strength

All of the simulations end before it stops moving. The brain needs a few seconds to take in the results of the penetration.

This is exactly how T-72B turret armor composition is laid out. Russians literally used nERA plates as composite armor filler in the turret. Also originally turret was covered by Kontact-1 ERA, then replaced with Kontakt-5 heavy ERA and now uses Relikt ERA.
The nERA plates also are of significantly higher hardness compared to that of outer cover of the turret.

In 1996/7 T-72B with 1989 standard was tested against all NATO APFSDS, including the Silver Bullet M829 APFSDS. Kontakt-5 ERA and armor had completely negated ALL western APFSDS rounds: they ALL failed to penetrate the T-72. It was a shock to NATO after the ease with which they had beaten the Asad Babyl tanks in Iraq. They thought this test will validate their advantage over Soviets, and the results were a rude awakening to NATO being actually BEHIND the Russians in tank protection.

Despite access to Kontakt-5, US to this day hasn't developed an ERA module that defeats APFSDS ammo: ERA plates for the TUSK kit are purely against HEAT ammo. And there is no guarantee if it'll stop an RPG-29 or, worse, RPG-26, the latter having over 1000mm RHA penetration BEHIND ERA.

For those who don't know, this is the frontal hull armor of the Abrams series tanks. A modular plate filled with a lot of NERA.
Part of the side turret armor has these modular plates too

Интересно физика работает, если когда снаряд полностью стирается об броню, даже маленькая пипка от него сохраняет ту же пробивную кинетическую энергию.

Nera is Non energetic reactive armor. While Nxra is non explosive reactive armor. They're the same thing but the naming/acronym is different. Anyhow, great video

I thought surely they are using some sort of ceramic (glass)/steel/rubber (polymer) sandwich. Just plain old rubber with some steel, I would think that ceramic with steel would be very difficult to penetrate.

Why can't they fill a space between armor plates with industrial diamonds? A compacted but loose fill of industrial diamond the size of pea gravel. How would industrial diamonds hold up to APFSDS attack?
