When we turn toward Jesus we simultaneously turn away from sin.

Great question!

We come to Christ as we are, but He doesn't leave us as we are, He changes us. 2nd Cor 5 v 17

Excellent answers. There is no way to have faith, without repentance (turning). A turning to Christ, is a turning (repenting) from darkness.

Truly repentance is a gift...we work out, what He has worked in.

Repentance is obedience to the calling from God.

"faith is trusting in, and repentance is turning from"

Repentance Involves a radical break with sin and turning to God Unless we repent Of our sins there is no forgiveness Because if we are living in sin and refuse to repent of that sin and turn from it we are living in rebellion against God Act 20:21, Mt 4:17, Act 2:38, Mk 1:15, Lk 13:3, Act 3:19, 1Cor 6:9-10, Eph 5:5-6, Gal 5;19-24, Rev 21:8, Hebrew 10:26-27.

They turned to God from idols, to serve the living and true God, and to wait for his Son from heaven.

I have always considered repentance an act of love - something you do not to be "good" or because we have to, but because we WANT to.

It's an aspect of conversion in which faith is implicit and works are inevitable

Surely repentance is mandatory. A duty.

Repentance is NOT work, it’s one of the immediate fruits of regeneration… Like what Dr. Lawson reiterated from the BIBLE, “JESUS is the Author and Finisher of our Salvation because GOD literally gave us the gift of both faith and repentance.” There’s NO way we can attribute it to fallen sinful man! Thank You JESUS!🙌🏼✝️🙌🏼

Therefore let us leave the ELEMENTARY DOCTRINE of Christ and go on to MATURITY, not laying again a foundation of REPENTANCE FROM DEAD WORKS and of FAITH TOWARD GOD

From @2:53 to @03:07 is worth making notes.

Repentance is something God gives—it is only possible because of His grace (Acts 5:31; 11:18). No one can repent unless God grants repentance. All of salvation, including repentance and faith, is a result of God drawing us, opening our eyes, and changing our hearts. God’s longsuffering leads us to repentance (2 Peter 3:9), as does His kindness (Romans 2:4).

Must a person forsake his sins in order to come to Christ?

Auchterarder Creed: “It is not sound and orthodox to teach that we must forsake sin
in order to our coming to Christ.”

Thomas Boston:

That it is the duty of all those that hear the gospel to instantly believe in Him without looking for any qualification from within.

That it is impossible for any to forsake their sins until the Spirit had determined him to come to Christ as a Prince and Savior exalted to give repentance and remission of sins.

Therefore it is the grace of God onto repentance and faith, then obedience and works.

Why not actually define the word repent first? Then, perhaps, there can be a discussion on whether repentance is a work or not.

The bible says that God does not tempt people to sin but always makes a way out. Yet theology states that sanctification is synergistic, thus nullifying that idea.

Repentance is metanoya which is change of mind. We change our mind about God and through faith we are converted. Repentance is not conversion. Faith is a gift which needs to be exercised.
